Townhouse I

Family Home by JDK Interiors in US

I was approached by a young couple to completely revamp their 3600 sq ft home in time for the birth of their first child. Though a bit daunting, I happily accepted the 4-month challenge and was granted an unlimited budget along with the unrestrained trust of my client. The scheme however, was conditional upon the client’s desire to incorporate the color blue into each space of the 4 bedroom home. Since one’s aesthetic taste tends to develop over time, my goal was to ensure this home would evolve with the young family while still maintaining a youthful appearance. Though they wanted a simple and clutter free space, they also wanted it to feel warm and inviting, rather than contemporary, minimalistic and cold. To achieve this, I infused the space with a lot of sumptuous texture rather than busy patterns and art-filled walls. I decided on a palette of light blues alongside natural tones of browns and creams. I layered an array of solid textiles, such as cashmeres, alpacas, linens, tweeds, silks and leathers to create a feeling of warm minimalism.

I mixed a range of furniture styles, both new and old, to create an edgy young flair in the open-plan living and dining areas, as well as in the kitchen. In the living room a cashmere-wrapped 80’s style sectional is juxtaposed with a modern, architectural leather-wrapped sofa and reupholstered vintage Harvey Prober swivel chairs. In the master bedroom, I continued the playful mix of materials and shapes. I custom designed a roll-tufted headboard with an embossed leather inset panel and oil rubbed wood frame. Icy blue leather-wrapped wall tiles, a cobalt suede bench and custom nightstands with hammered metal drawer faces illustrate the attention to detail and the need to create layered spaces full of visual surprise. Every single nook in this home was thought out, designed and executed within the tight time frame. It was the most comprehensive project I have ever completed in so little time to date.
