Noise Shelf

Noise Shelf is an NFT animation linked with a hanging, physical stained glass piece. To create these multi-layered pieces, LoVid records video with their custom analog A/V synthesizers. After sourcing hours of video synth footage, single video frames are selected and translated into digital drawings that serve as technical sketches for one of a kind stained glass panels. The physical stained glass works are created with a fabricator using traditional stained glass tools of cutting the colorful glass pieces and soldering them together. For LoVid, video-synthesizer patterns exist as a continuation of the tradition of decor, historically incorporating floral motifs from the natural world. For LoVid; RGB colors, glitches, and sine waves are gardens of the metaverse and technological age. The resulting stained glass panels cast a ghostly reproduction of the original video frame like an ancient video projector.

LoVid is composed of the fabled New York artist duo Tali Hinkis and Kyle Lapidus. Their award-winning transmedia work juxtaposes virtual and physical experience, and has been compared to visual ASMR, psychedelic sea creatures and unhinged quilting projects. To create the deeply-layered NFTs in this exhibition, they employ a kaleidoscopic range of technologies and processes from synesthetic composition and electrical engineering, to analog synthesizer video, to glitch and noise, to wearable design and stained glass. In the video below, they share a behind-the-scenes look into their studio, where the multi-dimensional magic happens. These activated pieces embrace the dualities of virtual and physical, material and simulation, fantasy and reality, hope and despair, and connectivity and isolation. LoVid's performances, video, and media installations have been presented worldwide, from MoMA, the New Museum, and the Museum of the Moving Image, to avant-garde institutions like Issue Project Room and The Kitchen. They have received grants and support from Rhizome, Franklin Furnace, Elastic City, Wave Farm, The Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, Experimental TV Center, and LMCC; and awards from NYSCA, NYFA, Foundation for Contemporary Art, and Greenwall Foundation; and residencies with STEIM (Netherlands), Harvestworks, Eyebeam, Smack Mellon, and Cue Art Foundation. LoVid’s videos are distributed by EAI (Electronic Arts Intermix) and NFTs are represented by PostmastersBlockchain.

Exhibition Notes

Noise Shelf is presented in “Metaglyphs,” curated by Katie Peyton Hofstadter. Metaglyphs showcases artists using digital technologies to generate layers of meaning on more than one experiential plane, and includes work by Alfredo Salazar-Caro, Amy Kurzweil, Claudia Hart, LaJuné McMillian, LoVid, Carla Gannis, FakeShamus, Morehshin Allahyari, Savannah Spirit, and Swoon.

Metaglyph roughly translates to “beyond symbol” — an artwork representing the interconnected relationship between object materiality and digital existence. For as long as humans have told stories, we’ve been interested in objects that exist at the border between worlds. From ancient mythology to modern science fiction, our archetypal stories are filled with magical objects that serve as keys, black mirrors of culture and false identity, secret weapons with hidden powers. These NFT tokenized artworks use multiple techniques — ranging from digital simulation technology to 3D modeling to glitch — to probe the boundaries and consequences of our digital and analog desires.

The goal is not to replace reality, but to return to and enrich it. When we step through the looking glass — when we board the vessel — what will we see?

“These artworks are vessels that serve as a link between the familiar and the unknown. It’s the butterfly pinned to the board, and the butterfly rising above it. Not just the shark’s tooth, but its bite.”
