Flight

From the current Yonder series, I am offering a selection of digital C-prints and moving image works, that address the entangled crises of our contemporary tangible and virtual selves. Each of these works derives from a series of 3D LiDAR scans that I have created with my iPhone, to represent my thoughts on selfhood as it is expressed within the radical phenomenology provided by the advent of mixed reality. The invention of tube paints had a significant impact on 19th century painters, who could suddenly take their practice outdoors, painting "from life." Today, a handheld "phone" (i.e., a mobile device that operates as a minicomputer) can capture volumetric impressions of life. As I walk the streets of New York, sit in the window seat of an airplane, lie on my bed covered with plastic objects painted gold, or hold my "avatar mannequin" in front of a bathroom mirror, it is through "a scanner darkly" I go. For Yonder, I re-construct these "3D snapshots" into fragmentary mise-en-scènes, through a multi-media process that includes 3D animation, digital painting and AI generated imagery. In each of these works, appearing as human, cyborg and avatar, I embody my (and our) collectively shared anxieties in an attempt to release them at this excruciating moment within our human timeline. In this context, "yonder" is a place and state of being, just within sight, but not quite. Even when we perceive we have arrived, much remains illusory. Exhibition Notes

Flight is presented in “Metaglyphs,” curated by Katie Peyton Hofstadter. Metaglyphs showcases artists using digital technologies to generate layers of meaning on more than one experiential plane, and includes work by Alfredo Salazar-Caro, Amy Kurzweil, Claudia Hart, LaJuné McMillian, LoVid, Carla Gannis, FakeShamus, Morehshin Allahyari, Savannah Spirit, and Swoon.

The winning bidder of this work will receive an additional physical C-Print (pictured above)

Metaglyph roughly translates to “beyond symbol” — an artwork representing the interconnected relationship between object materiality and digital existence. For as long as humans have told stories, we’ve been interested in objects that exist at the border between worlds. From ancient mythology to modern science fiction, our archetypal stories are filled with magical objects that serve as keys, black mirrors of culture and false identity, secret weapons with hidden powers. These NFT tokenized artworks use multiple techniques — ranging from digital simulation technology to 3D modeling to glitch — to probe the boundaries and consequences of our digital and analog desires.

The goal is not to replace reality, but to return to and enrich it. When we step through the looking glass — when we board the vessel — what will we see?

“These artworks are vessels that serve as a link between the familiar and the unknown. It’s the butterfly pinned to the board, and the butterfly rising above it. Not just the shark’s tooth, but its bite.”
