George Jones Majolica Strawberry Server White Wicker Ground, English, ca. 1868

About the Item

George Jones Majolica Strawberry server on white wicker ground with rare cream and sugar Baskets, English, circa 1868. Impressed British Registry Mark to reverse for 16 June 1868. This was one of the first majolica patterns registered by George Jones. (Please see our listing on 1stdibs for the same model in a yellow wicker ground version.) The vast majority of the majolica pieces made by the George Jones firm typically came in two ground color versions: Turquoise and Cobalt Blue; oftentimes additionally, in Pink and Mottled Green. White ground items are scarcer, but clearly the white wicker ground here plays beautiful host to the deep and varying greens, the pink blossoms and linings, and the red strawberries. In her 1989 book, Majolica: British, Continental and American Wares, 1851--1915, Victoria Bergesen states: "The majolica of George Jones vies with that of Minton and Wedgwood for the place of best majolica ever produced" (p. 74). George Jones Majolica Pattern number 2515 with 'optional cream & sugar baskets' (see Bergesen)* A rare George Jones Majolica model made rarer still with the cream and sugar baskets. In excellent antique condition, with no damage, repair, or restoration. For over 28 years we have been among the world's preeminent specialists in fine antique Majolica. Victoria Bergesen, Majolica: British, Continental and American Wares, 1851-1915. London: Barrie & Jenkins Publishers, 1989. George Jones Majolica Pattern Books from the Wedgwood Archive, pp. 201-205.
