It is signed on the bottom right hand corner S Kitayama and dated 1912.
Further inscription in Kanji on the back of the frame.
Frame measures 17 x 20 1/2 inches
Painting measures 9 1/4 x 12 3/4 inches
Frame is original to the painting and of the period.
The painter is most likely Seitaro Kitayama (Japanese, 1888-1945), an important figure in late Meiji period credited with being the father of Japanese animation before Walt Disney started his company.
The painting style is impressionism which was keenly followed by a new generation of Japanese artists who either traveled to Europe for training or received Western publications on artists and gallery shows at home.
Kitayama, Seitaro was born on March 3, 1888 in Wakayama, and died on February 13, 1945.
In 1911, Kitayama became an apprentice to Tojiro Oshita and, while studying painting, also helped out with editing the art magazine Mizue. He soon moved to Tokyo and established the Western Art Guild of Japan and published Contemporary Western Art. He later joined the Fusain Art Group as a manager where he would support young western-style artists such as Ryusei Kishida and Sohachi Kimura by providing art supplies, in addition to holding exhibitions and publishing catalogues. On the other hand, he entered the Nikkatsu Mukojima Studio in 1916, proposed the inclusion of illustrations in intertitles, and made this his work. An impressive pagoda form carved hardwood display cabinet with bone and boxwood inlay, crafted for the Peranakan (Straits-Chinese) community in Southeast Asia, mostly likely Malaysia, Indonesia, or Singapore, early 20th century.
The large display cabinet with four wide open shelves for display, set on four clawed feet, and surmounted by a peaked roof topped by a tiered pagoda with carved figures to the interior. A further set of pagodas with figures adorns each corner.
The peaked roof decorated with a pair of magnificent phoenixes in flight flanking a large peony spray and a roundel featuring the goddess Magu and an attendant. The decoration of carved and inlaid boxwood. Clouds of carved bone scattered throughout. The sides of the roof each with a pair of sinuous dragons among clouds, a "shou" (longevity) medallion between them, all of carved and inlaid boxwood.

Rare Large Vase with White Slip Inlay Makuzu Kozan Meiji Period

A impressively large and unusual stoneware vase in an urn shape from the studio of Japanese Potter Makuzu Kozan, also known as Miyagawa Kozan (1842–1916), one of the most established and collected ceramist from Meiji Period. Born as Miyagawa Toranosuke, Kozan established his pottery studio in Yokohama circa 1870s and later became one of the appointed artist to the Japanese Imperial household. His work was exhibited in many international fairs that the Meiji government participated at the turn of the century and won many grand prizes.
This vase is dated to the end of Makuzu's life circa 1910-1916 based on similar work created around that time. After achieving domestic and international fame, Makuzu retired and handed the business to his son Hanzan in 1912. He dedicated his time to other selected projects that were more in tune with Japanese sensibility than export aesthetic. He made a group of stoneware pottery pieces inspired by Edo master like Ninsei and Kenzan as well as his own poetic creation. This piece is attributed to that period.
Standing of an impressive size, this vase is more like an urn, made with stoneware instead of porcelain. It was coated with a brown iron glaze with a slight translucent quality. Underglaze whit slips were used to draw low relief decoration of bamboo leaves that sparsely scatter on the surface. Slightly more elaborate scrolling vines and autumn flowers circles under the mouth rim. Same white slip inlay was used to sign the vase under the base. The whole effect of the piece is unusual. With its dark glaze in contrast with the sparse white decoration that is more abstract and geometric than realistic, it appears almost modern with an Art Deco flavor.
