The artist has selected the iconic landmark of Kolkata city, during the peak of the British Empire in India. This ethereal scene with the Heritage Building and motor cab is captivating and encapsulates the character of the heritage city with drama and poise. The watercolor artist has avoided excessive detailing and by highlighting just the key features of a Heritage Building & Old Kolkata Streets with crumbling structures, results in a fresh, inviting composition.
Style : Saikat does his painting in stages, starting with large, vague color areas established on wet paper, then refines the image through a sequence of washes and glazes, making the works as durable as oils or acrylics. The pigments are held by arabic gum with additives like glycerine and solvents that give the medium durability.
Watercolors appear more vivid than acrylics or oils because the pigments are laid down in a more pure form with fewer fillers obscuring the pigment colors. Multiple layers of watercolor thus achieve a very luminous effect. Water being an active and complex partner in the watercolor painting process, it changes the outlines and appearance of the paint as it dries. Saikat has mastered the difficult art of anticipating and leveraging the behavior of water, rather than attempting to control it.
Saikat uses the ‘wash’, ‘glaze’ and ‘wet in wet’ methods of application to produce a huge variety of striking works, definitely worth collecting.
In my watercolour paintings, the beauty lies in the freshness of colours, their transparency and purity along with a slightly unfinished look resulting in a more natural effect. My watercolours try infusing life in common place objects and making them look spectacularly real.

In this recent work, by using the medium of mixed media on paper, Bhaskaran produces a softer, more ethereal feeling and his choice of yellowy orange and form of the cat juxtaposed against the black form of the jar, leads to a strong, playful yet elegant composition.
Modern and Contemporary Artwork from India is now International in its collecting base. Leading artist’s such as R B Bhaskaran have always operated on a global platform. Born in 1942 in Madras, India, Bhaskaran was an important part of the exciting explosion of Modern Art which began in India the 1960’s. He worked between India, the US and the UK, practising and learning with some of the best.
Provenance: Coming directly from the artist’s studio, we are delighted to be bringing this work to the market for the first time. The painting comes with a Certificate from the Gallery.
Condition and framing. The work is titled 'Cat and Black Jar' and was made in 2017. Image size is 36 inches by 48 inches, mixed media on canvas and with the frame the work is is 46 inches by 58 inches, The painting is in good condition.

Paintings by leading Indian artist R B Bhaskaran, often large-scale and vibrant, use a stripped-down imagery that celebrates form, colour and ground. Only the best artists make a success from such simplicity. They capture our imagination and draw us into the work. These paintings allow us to explore an intangibility of thoughts, feelings, and fleeting private moments. Bhaskaran’s paintings are great artworks and great art often teaches us something about ourselves.
Just like his contemporary, Howard Hodgkin, Bhaskaran’s paintings are distinctive. The brushstrokes and limited palette of strong colours point us straight to the artist and the spontaneity of his forms. Whilst his images may appear to be simple in their choice of objects and shapes they are anything but, which is why they hold our attention and draw us in. Each work, peppered with mark-making, lines, dots, and colour spots, creates paths that expand the narratives the paintings offer.

STYLE : Anil Kumar Yadav is an Artist from Kolkata who was born in 1984 a village in Uttar Pradesh. He grew up among villagers with modest lives and the village culture. The Rangolis at the village festival and the local potters’ fine works of art inspired him greatly towards art as a hobby and potential career from early childhood.
His father was then posted to Kolkata so their family relocated to the city. Once the capital of India, with its rich cultural heritage and character immediately caught my attention. He started painting for the first time in the city.
Since the central theme to his paintings is related to present day society, his works appear photographic or naturalistic. The religious ghats of Varanasi, Haridwar and other antique places attracted him for their cultural heritage characterised by the holy saints, antique architectures, old idol sculptures and mysticism, spirituality. So he portrayed the simplicity of the architectural doors, temples, sculptures and the beautiful narrow streets and ‘galis’ which holds beauty that can not be described in words.
He always prefers a highly realistic approach in his paintings for whatever he sees in his surroundings. He started to represent paintings in a form whose expression manifests a step ahead of photography. He has always tried to reach to a horizon where photography cannot reach and make a statement what is called hyperrealism.

Pradosh’s works can be described as psychic automatism in its pure state. His works are expressive and his palette vibrant and gorgeous. Nature is the frequent imagery that we see in his paintings. Sometimes his imagery is outlandish, perplexing and uncanny as it is meant to shake the viewer and make them to think beyond the theories which they have guarded themselves with.
Lot of elements that we see in pradosh’s paintings also come from his childhood days in Odisha. His paintings often take us on a nostalgic ride where we see elements which we were so used to and have now learnt to live without. Pradosh’s works can be described as psychic automatism in its pure state. His works are expressive and his palette vibrant and gorgeous. Nature is the frequent imagery that we see in his paintings. Sometimes his imagery is outlandish, perplexing and uncanny as it is meant to shake the viewer and make them to think beyond the theories which they have guarded themselves with.
Lot of elements that we see in pradosh’s paintings also come from his childhood days in Odisha. His paintings often take us on a nostalgic ride where we see elements which we were so used to and have now learnt to live without. He uses common elements that we see in our day to day life to convey his feelings and thought which makes his works all the more interesting. His paintings leave the viewer perplexed at the first glance but a deeper look gives the insight into his thoughts that instigate him to create.
Pradosh’s paintings have a surrealistic quality, the imagery is dreamy and mystical and rendering is such as if there is some kind of romance and magic happening amongst the colours in his palette. His paintings are the result of brilliant culminations of feelings and things that are between imagination and reality. They reflect his genuine concern about issues he feels for. He emphasizes on the power of imagination and believes that revelation could be found anywhere….on the streets and in everyday life. Through his paintings artist depicts the notion that how our high pace life is making all of us loose that contact from the nature or even with ourselves.
About the Artist and his work :
Born : 1972 , Orissa.
Education :
1994 : Bachelor in Fine Arts from Utkal University.
1989 : Diploma in Photographic from College of Education and Technology, Bubaneswar
2005 : Certificate Course on Reprography from National archives of India, New Delhi.
2007 : Conservation of Art Objects from National Research Laboratory for Conservation of Cultural Property, Lucknow.
