To give you some art informations, Jackson Pollock, born January 28, 1912 in Cody, Wyoming and died August 11, 1956 in Springs, New York, was an American painter of abstract expressionism, known worldwide during his lifetime.
Jackson Pollock made more than 700 works, completed paintings, painted or sculpted essays and drawings as well as some engravings.
He had a decisive influence on the course of contemporary art.
To give you some art informations on Larry Poons (b.1937 in Tokyo, Japan) is an American artist known for his pursuit of painting, which began in 1959 and continues apace today.
From 1955 to 1957 Poons studied composition at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. In 1959, he saw Barnett Newman’s exhibition at French & Company in New York and subsequently relinquished music studies to enroll at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. After graduation, he moved to New York where he had his first solo exhibition in 1963 at Richard Bellamy’s Green Gallery.
In 1965, MoMA curator William Seitz included Poons in “The Responsive Eye” along with Josef Albers, Larry Bell, Ellsworth Kelly, and Ad Reinhardt. In 1969, Poons was the youngest artist to participate in "New York Painting and Sculpture, 1940–1970,” curated by Henry Geldzahler at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Other artists included in the landmark survey were Hans Hoffman, Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Jules Olitski. The work in question depicts the scene of and was made by the famous italian painter Pietro Domenico Ollivero. The oval canvas shows on the back the card of the Galleria Caretto in Turin (Italy) with the authentic 1965 Giorgio Caretto. The work was also published in "I Piaceri e le grazie" by Arabella Cifani and Franco Monetti in 1993.
The subject refers to the history of Rome and an episode narrated by the historian Valerio Massimo.
Manius Curius Dentatus (330 BC - 270 BC), one of the great Romans of the 3rd century B.C. was a consul in ancient Rome, known for ending the Samnite Wars. Elected consul in 290 BC. along with Publio Cornelio Rufino, in the same year he fought and won the Third War against the Samnites and their allies, thus ending a conflict that had lasted for 49 years. He definitively subdued the Sabines and the Greek army of Pyrrhus in the battle of Benevento. He represented the ideal prototype of ancient Roman for the generations that followed in that he avoided public honours; Cato the censor, who collected his sayings, placed him among the great figures of universal history. For centuries after his death (in 270 B.C. while overseeing the construction of the second aqueduct in Rome) his military exploits were recounted and his moral rectitude was praised as an example for all the Romans. Ollivero, in the cultured choice of the episode, illustrates the moment when Manio Curio Dentato is found in his home, characterized by Roman walls, sitting by the fire, on a rustic bench while eating his meal in a "ligneo catillo" (wooden basin...

George Lance (24 March 1802 – 18 June 1864) was an English painter of still life and portrait miniatures.
Lance was born at the old manor-house in Little Easton in Essex. His father was William Lance who had previously served in a regiment of light horse and was at the time of Lance's birth an adjutant in the Essex yeomanry; he later became the inspector of the Bow Street horse-patrol. His mother, Louisa Lucy (née) Constable, with whom his father had eloped from boarding-school, was the daughter of Colonel Constable of Beverley in Yorkshire.
Although Lance showed a predilection for art at a very early age, he was placed, while not yet fourteen, in a factory in Leeds. However, the work injured his health and he returned to London. Wandering one day into the British Museum, he casually started a conversation with Charles Landseer, who happened to be drawing there. On learning that Landseer was a pupil of Benjamin Haydon, he went early next morning to that painter's residence, and asked to become a pupil. Haydon replied that if his drawings promised future success he would instruct him for nothing. Not many days later Lance, still not yet fourteen, entered Haydon's studio, and remained there for seven years, at the same time studying in the schools of the Royal Academy.
While designing a picture inspired by Homer's Iliad, he decided, before putting on the colours, to paint some fruit and vegetables as practice. This work attracted the notice of Sir George Beaumont, who purchased it, and this success led him to paint another fruit-piece, which he sold to the Earl of Shaftesbury. Artist/ School: Norman A. Olley (British, 20th century, 1908-1996), 1993, signed to the front and inscribed verso
Title - "Summer Evening by the Thames near Hampton Middlesex", a colourful busy scene of people enjoying boating and fishing on the river near London.
Medium: pastel on thick layered card, unframed. A sheet of protective paper is attached to the upper edge, which we will leave in place to protect it until it is with its new owner for framing.
Measures: Painting : 15.5 x 10.5 inches
Provenance: all the paintings we have by this artist have come from a private UK collection of this artists work.
Condition: The painting is in overall very good and sound condition. We have measured to exclude the unpainted edges.
Artist: Norman Arthur Olley was born in 1908 to a British Army family stationed in Lucknow, Bengal India. His mother died there in 1911, and his father in 1936.
Norman married in Gravesend Kent in 1937, and at the beginning of the war in 1939 he was an aircraft sheet metal worker.
He and his wife to Surrey in the late 1940's -early 1950's where he was a long term member of the Thames Valley Arts Club and where he regularly exhibited his work. In 1951 his painting "View from Richmond Park" was held in high regard at a very well attended exhibition in Esher, Surrey.
