Art Nouveau Watches

ART NOUVEAU STYLE

Art Nouveau — generally considered to have begun in the late 1800s and ended with the start of World War I — was a movement in the decorative arts that drew inspiration from natural forms, such as trees, flowers and, of course, the human figure. The three main themes present in Art Nouveau jewelry and watches were flora, fauna and women.

Art Nouveau, which reached its pinnacle in the year 1900, spawned from artists who rejected the historicism of their predecessors to create an entirely new visual vocabulary. As compared to Art Deco jewelry’s geometric patterns and sharp lines, the extravagant style of antique Art Nouveau jewelry is characterized by curvilinear forms and whiplash lines, vibrant materials and dramatic imagery.

The first art and design movement of the 20th century, Art Nouveau was also a reaction against the Industrial Revolution, and took its inspiration from the theories of the Symbolists, the art of the Pre-Raphaelites, the ideas of John Ruskin and his follower William Morris and, most importantly Japanese crafts. (The country was a fertile ground for inspiration after it was opened to the West in 1854.) The Art Nouveau style touched all manners of the arts, including the most exultant jewelry.

Nature was a favorite muse for artists going back to the 18th and 19th centuries, but in the hands of 20th-century artists, it was depicted in new ways. For example, a withering flower was considered just as beautiful as one in full bloom. Winged creatures, such as insects and birds, were also a popular subject. Dragonflies and butterflies were particular favorites because they morphed so dramatically in different life stages.

This was also a reference to women, whose role in society was evolving. It was not uncommon to see a piece of jewelry that would at once reference a woman as a winged creature (think René Lalique’s famous Dragonfly brooch, circa 1897–98, at the Gulbenkian Collection in Lisbon). However, just as women’s roles were ambiguous, so was their image, as the femmes nouvelle were simultaneously eroticized and romanticized.

In addition to Lalique, vital figures in Art Nouveau jewelry included Louis Comfort Tiffany in the United States, Vladimir Soloviev, who designed jewelry for Peter Carl Fabergé in Russia, Fuset Grau of Spain, Karl Rothmuller of Germany and Philippe Wolfers of Belgium.

Art Nouveau jewelers used every “canvas” imaginable, looking beyond brooches and necklaces to belt buckles, fans, tiaras, dog collars (a type of choker necklace), pocket watches, corsages and hair combs. Multicolored gems and enamel could complete this vision better than diamonds. Jewelers also favored pearls, particularly baroque pearls, for their large size and irregular shape. However, opal was the most popular stone — its iridescence harmonized perfectly with the enamel, and it could be carved into any shape. Art Nouveau jewelry was primarily set in yellow gold.

Omega Cocktail - Vintage White Gold & Diamond Manual Wind Ladies' Watch
Located in Antwerp, BE
Up for sale is this beautiful Swiss Made 18k White Gold and Diamond Ladies' cocktail watch with reference number 7256, made by Omega and dating back to 1969 based on its serial number. The watch case measures approximately 16.5mm in diameter, is crafted from solid 18k white gold, and seamlessly flows over into the white gold mesh bracelet. The factory set diamond bezel contains 20 high quality brilliant cut diamonds totalling approximately 0.4ct. The dial is kept to its bare minimum: simplistic hour markers combined with a vertically brushed silver tone dial and baton shaped hands create a minimalist watch face. Behind the solid gold case back we find the beating heart of this watch: a mechanical hand-winding Omega movement with caliber reference 650. Thanks to the incorporation of this movement, the watch case can be kept as thin as 6mm. For such a sleek and refined watch, its total weight still adds up to about 36.5 grams. The watch is sold as pre-owned and vintage, however it still is in good condition considering its age. You will find wear marks on the case and bracelet, but no coarse damage. The case has been cleaned thoroughly, but was left unpolished to maintain its original edges and curves. The sapphire crystal looks unscathed to the naked eye. The crown is original and signed with the Omega logo. The movement was freshly serviced, and is working perfectly. Please study the pictures in this listing well: they show the watch in the condition that it is in, with no digital enhancements to make it look better than it is. We are sure that you like honesty, and so do we. Please do note that the clasp has a small adjustment setting, but the bracelet on this watch is otherwise not drastically resizable. Ideally, the watch fits wrists with a circumference between 16 and 17.5cm. Accompanying the watch is its lovely original clamshell Omega presentation box, but sadly no paperwork is present with this piece. Your new timepiece will be packaged with great care, and will be shipped out as fast as possible. We usually ship the same day your payment comes in, and provide full insurance as well as a tracking code for all of our packages. If you have any questions regarding the item or our services, please do not hesitate to reach out. We'll gladly assist as soon as we get the chance. Ferdinand Verger Freres Platinum Tonneau Art Deco Art Nouveau Watch with Diamond
Located in PARIS, FR
VERGER FRERES Founded in 1872 For the discerning ones Wear Verger watch it's integrate the club of famous clients : Mary Pickford, Arletty, Mistinguett, Joan Crawford, Paulette Godard, Katherine Hepburn, Claudette Colbert, Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, Dolores Del Rio, Anne May Wong, Merle Oberon, Mae West, Sonja Henie, Gloria Swanson... Founded in 1872 by Ferdinand Verger, Verger Frères realised the synthesis in its time between Art Nouveau and Art Deco. Due to its recognized know-how during the Roaring Twenties, Verger Frères worked for the most renowned European jewelers such as Boucheron, Van Cleef & Arpels, Hermès, Ostertag or Lacloche Frères, as well as the great American Jewelers such as Tiffany & Co, Marcus & Co, Black Starr & Frost. Thus, Verger Frères became a Jeweler of Jewelers, working for all the major houses, from Place Vendôme in Paris, to Rue du Rhône in Geneva, to 5th Avenue in New York and Rodeo Drive in Los Angeles. A Gerald Genta of its Time. During the 1920s, the city of Paris became the capital of the arts and the privileged meeting place for artists and intellectuals of that time. Thus, Gertrude Stein introduced Picasso, Braque and Matisse to the works of Hemingway and Scott Fitzgerald. The beautiful world frequents the salons of the capital, and Verger Frères is the jeweler of choice for many personalities. A year before the great founding exhibition of Art Deco in Paris, in 1924, French luxury was exported to New York at the Grand Central Palace for an exhibition which, for the first time, brought together Parisian jewelers such as Verger Frères, Cartier, Mauboussin or Templier with fashion designers like the Callot sisters, Paquin, Vionnet, Jeanne Lanvin, or Worth. Thanks to this exposure, it will be able to develop throughout the United States with a presence at Neiman Marcus as well as at the first retailers in major American cities such as Philadelphia (Caldwell J.E.), Palm Beach (Greenleaf & Crosby) or Chicago (Trabert & Hoeffer ) and especially in Los Angeles with Trabert & Hoeffer and Laykin, two of the jewelers, of which all of Hollywood was a customer. Verger deserves immortality, as do most of the objects that they made. As Ralph Esmerian concisely put it: “In terms of their creativity and production, they’re [Verger] right at the top of the French manufacturers, including the great retail names”. Make the perfect gift with this fabulous Art Deco watch by Ferdinand Verger the founder of Verger Frères. The early pieces will bear the early trademark, “FV”, for Ferdinand Verger (after 1872); “VF” for Verger Frères from 1911–1935; Georges Verger...

Art Nouveau Antique Swiss 14K Gold Pocket Watch with Old Cut Diamonds in Box
Located in Danvers, MA
I'm pleased to offer a lovely ladies' gold pocket watch featuring an elegant design with old cut diamonds in 14K gold. Currently keeping time, it retains full Swiss hallmarks and looks gorgeous worn on a chain (please note that the chain shown in my photo is not included in the listing) Crafted of solid 14K yellow gold, the hunter style case is set with 5 fiery old cut diamonds in a classic Art Nouveau design. The dial is easy to read with Arabic numerals and a sub dial for seconds. The watch winds, ticks and is keeping time, though may benefit from a cleaning or adjustment, especially after shipping. In good condition, it is beautiful not just as a pendant, but as a timepiece. The outer gold case measures approximately 1 3/16 inches in diameter (30 mm), while the dial measures approximately 24 mm, as near as I can tell as it is still within the gold bezel of the case. I have not removed the watch from the case, so can only estimate that the pocket watch is a size 6/0. (it could be a little smaller or larger but is definitely a ladies' watch) The finished weight with case and movement is 23.52 grams. In good original condition, the dial has a pretty embossed design with black numerals and gold colored hands; the background color is a light creamy silvery color. I see very little wear under magnification - perhaps one mark, scratch or small hairline at the number "5." The crystal also remains in wonderful condition with almost no wear, even under magnification. There is no maker's name on the dial, so I am assuming the works were made for Ed. Barth in Zurich to sell, as his hallmark is inside the gold case. Multiple hallmarks are inside the gold case, including marks for 14K gold - ".585" in Europe, Swiss Squirrel marks that I believe have tiny "c" marks indicating being assayed in Chaux-de-Fonds (though the mark on the crown looks more like a "D" so it could be Delemont - the marks are very tiny), a crown (sometimes seen on Swiss watches that might be sold in Germany), a small maker's mark that could be a stylized "AH," and several numerals: "990" and "80990." There is also the mark of "Ed. Barth, Zurich." Of good quality, the chunky old diamonds (old European and Swiss cuts with open culets) measure approximately 1.8 mm, 2 mm and 1.8 mm in diameter for the three at the top of the design in the diamond shaped settings, and approximately 2.5 mm in diameter each for the two larger diamonds in the round settings, for an estimated total weight of .19 carats, or so. Bright and fiery, I would judge them to be in the H-I range of near-colorless. All are clean to the naked eye, with a couple of teeny tiny clear inclusions seen with magnification, so I would put them in the VS to SI range of clarity. They could use a cleaning, as could the gold in general. Overall, the watch is in very nice antique condition with light wear - the gold has most of its high karat bloomed finish on the front of the case, though one can see more of the underlying 14K gold on the back, where it was worn against the body. There is a small lever near the dial that allows one to set the time, rather than using the crown. The pocket watch comes in an antique leather case...
