Harry Potter's Watch London 1791 Gold Repousse Verge Fusee

About the Item

FACTORY / HOUSE: Harry Potter STYLE / REFERENCE: Triple Cased Repousse Pocket Watch METAL / MATERIAL: 18Kt. Yellow Gold & Chagreen DIMENSIONS: Diameter 2 1/8 in. (5.4 cm) CIRCA: 1791 MOVEMENT / CALIBER: Verge Fuzee DIAL / HANDS: Original Enamel / Pierced Gold Hands WARRANTY: 18 months on the movement LIFETIME SERVICE COMMITMENT This magnificent Triple Cased Verge Fuzee Pocket Watch was produced by HARRY POTTER, a premier London watchmaker in the year 1791. Harry Potter Sr. was a master watchmaker working in London between 1775–1803. He died in 1813. Located in Cripplegate, number 5 Well Street, Potter was renowned for his complex movements and finely finished cases. The impressive repousse case reveals riders on camels and knights. The case was likely finished in his own shop by Maweis, also a renowned jeweler of the time. A similar example, in poorer condition was bequeathed to the Metropolitan Museum by Laura Frances Hearn in 1917. Laura was an avid art and watch collector. When she died her substantial watch collection was given to the museum. There are also examples of Potter's watches in the British Museum. The outer, Chagreen case has been cosmetically restored, however the two gold inner cases are in excellent condition. Most impressively is the enamel dial, which is in very good condition. Remarkably, this watch still has its original hands. The watch has both its original crystals. The dial side crystal done as a Bulls Eye is original. It is revealed in some of the front shots diffusing the light making it appear that the name is broken into section, it is not, this is just a result of the photography. Rest assured though the name is clear and pristine. The watch still runs and keeps time for its period.

Its origin is unknown. Verge escapements were used from the late 13th century until the mid 19th century in clocks and pocketwatches. The name verge comes from the Latin virga, meaning stick or rod.[1] Its invention is important in the history of technology, because it made possible the development of all-mechanical clocks.
