Basic Specs & Case Dimensions - 60mm Height (Top of Bow to Bottom of Case) x 48mm Width x 13mm thickness - Recently Serviced The present timepiece is a beautifully preserved and very interesting 1900s Girard Perregaux gentleman's two tone, pink gold, silver and enamel dress pocket watch. Retailed in the famous Swiss city La Chaux -De- Fonds as likely a premier commission by the world renown watch manufacturing firm Girard Perregaux, indicated by the dial signature, this highly personalized commission is designed with a well kept fancy black sector dial and sub second complication window located at the 6 position. There is no signs of wear or patina which is also notable given its age and also as black dial timepieces in general are more susceptible to fading further indicating that it has been well cared for over time and seldomly used when combined with the sharp hallmarks and overall continued timekeeping precision it still exhibits nearly 120 years later. In addition to the attributes mentioned above, the present pocket watch stands out further from other timepieces of this period or examples produced by Girard Perregeaux as the case is designed with a highly ornate and very personalized portrait scene to depict in high relief a pink gold portrait scene of a well dressed (probably La Chaux De Fonds city gentleman in top hat and suit en route through the city backdrop with his chauffeur/ valet navigating the horse, his patron and of course his loyal dog following alongside. Additionally, the timepiece's portrait scene also displays accents of yellow flowers with green enameled leaf and vines along either side of the portrait. Historically, La Chaux De Fonds has been recognized as a major city familiar with the Art Nouveau design period and constitutes a unique urban and architectural ensemble, which was iconicly dedicated to watchmaking from the 18th century until the present day. In 1791, the roots of Girard Perregeaux first began with the watchmaker and goldsmith Jean-François Bautte who signed his first watches and created a manufacturing company in Geneva by grouping for the first time all the watchmaking facets of that time. This includes the engineering of the watch all the way to the final hand-assembly and hand-polishing of each timepiece. Then In 1832, Jacques Bautte and Jean-Samuel Rossel succeeded Jean Bautte, becoming the head of the company until in 1852, the watchmaker named, Constant Girard and founded Girard & Cie in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. Shortly after he then married Marie Perregaux in the same year, and as a result the watch making firm Girard-Perregaux Manufacture was founded in 1856… not too long before the present example was commissioned. In 1906, Constant Girard-Gallet, took over control of the Manufacture from his father, acquired the Bautte House and merged it with Girard-Perregaux & Cie and the signature found on the dial was commonly presented as the signature for this period with the city's name located on the dial under the newly merged company name Girard Perregaux with the city’s name also signed on some rare examples just below the company name, La chaux De fonds has been part of the signature during this timeframe. The city which is known famously for its layout along an open-ended scheme of parallel strips on which residential housing and workshops are intermingled back then reflected the needs of the local watchmaking culture that dated to the 17th century and is still alive today. In addition, the city is known as one of the most outstanding examples of mono-industrial manufacturing-towns which are well preserved and still active today and thus making a timepiece produced from this early era and city both a fascinating piece of art and history. Famously, the city is also known as the 10th Swiss site to be awarded world heritage status, joining others such as the old city Bern, the Rhaetian Railway, the Abby, the Convent of St. Gallen. When forward-looking Geneva-born watchmaker Jean-François Bautte signed his first watches in 1791, the now well-known legacy of illustrious Swiss watch company Girard-Perregaux began to take shape. From there, Bautte worked to establish a watch manufacturing company in his native city, where he promoted putting all the aspects of watchmaking within one facility, a pioneering move for the era. The Maison Bautte, whose clients included Queen Victoria and Alexandre Dumas, would become part of a watchmaking empire that started with a marriage.

Watchmaker Constant Girard founded the Girard & Cie Firm in 1852, and after he married Marie Perregaux (part of a celebrated chronometer family), the Girard-Perregaux Manufacture was founded in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1856. Like Bautte, Girard-Perregaux undertook all elements of the horological process in-house, a method that allowed the maison to produce watches that are recognized for their functional prowess as well as their decorative allure. Today's growing legions of watch collectors will find much to appreciate in vintage Girard-Perregaux watches, as the firm's timepieces often join form and function with designs that celebrate the mechanics of the watch. Girard was especially passionate about making the tourbillon into an aesthetic component of watchmaking as much as a functional element.

In 1906, the company — then under the leadership of the couple’s son, Constant Girard-Gallet — acquired Maison Bautte, joining its historic legacy with the company’s own. Girard-Perregaux continued to make technological advancements over the years, amassing nearly 80 horological patents and introducing innovations such as the 1965 Gyromatic HF, the first high-frequency, self-winding movement that ran at an incredible 36,000 vibrations an hour.

Standout designs in the company’s rich offerings over the years have included the 1884 Tourbillon with three gold bridges spanning the watch dial and framing the horological movement; the first quartz movement watch made in Switzerland in 1971, which set the global standard for quartz watches; the 2008 Constant Escapement L.M. that maintains constant energy on its escapement, solving a long-standing problem of mechanical watch precision; and the Girard-Perregaux 2020 Infinity made with precious onyx.

In 2011, the company became part of the Kering Group. Girard-Perregaux continues to operate out of its factory in La Chaux-de-Fonds, making it one of the oldest watchmakers in Switzerland, with new watch models often riffing off iconic designs while advancing a 21st-century commitment to sustainability. Its current logo — a watch bridge — celebrates the company’s heritage while looking ahead to the future.
