An Art Deco vintage wristwatch by Rolex made in 1930. The Rolex “Oyster” the world’s first waterproof watch. In 1927 Hans Wilsdorf, founder of the Rolex Watch Company, sent a newly launched Rolex Oyster to Mercedes Gleitze, to use during her attempt at swimming the English Channel. The success of the performance of the Rolex Oyster during the swim, led to its renown and place in world history. This is a rare opportunity to purchase one of the first original Rolex Oysters from that period. Soft vintage rose gold, square cushion oyster case in 9 carat gold with milled bezel, hallmarked for Glasgow import into the U.K. in 1930. Case marked with RWC Ltd lozenge and Oyster Watch Co with Swiss, French, U.S.A. and German Patents. 15 Jewel Rolex Chronometer Prima movement, timed for 6 positions, for all climates. Silvered engine turned starburst dial with black Roman numerals, black minute chapter and subsidiary dial for seconds. Blued steel fancy hands. Case, movement and dial signed. Case measurements: Length (lug to lug): 38 mm. Width: 32 mm. Originally a man’s watch, however, now suitable for a woman or a man that likes classic watches. All watches are given a full thorough service. They are stripped down to their individual parts, thoroughly checked for any obvious wear and tear, cleaned, re-oiled, reassembled and regulated. The final result is that the case, dial and movement are in pristine condition. Due to the age of the watch, naturally, we do not guarantee the watch as waterproof.
