GEORGIAN STYLE

Georgian jewelry is named for the monarchies of the four King Georges, who in succession ruled England starting in 1714 (plus King William’s reign, which lasted until 1837). A slew of beautiful pieces were produced during the period, and today antique Georgian rings, necklaces and other accessories are coveted by fine jewelry collectors.

There are certain features that distinguish jewelry from this era, including the fact that pieces from the 18th and early 19th centuries were handmade (so don’t let the absence of a maker’s mark lead you to believe otherwise). Antique Georgian jewelry also has a certain “look.” It’s a bit gray because stones were often set in silver, and because stonecutting techniques were not as advanced as they are today, the gems do not possess the level of sparkle to which we have become accustomed.

Intricate metalworking techniques such as repoussé (the hammering of metal into ornate designs) and cannetille (a method of working the gold wire to make it look woven) allowed goldsmiths to really flex their muscles. These gold pieces, either on their own or combined with gemstones, made for highly original and dramatic jewelry. The era also saw pieces with ornately woven strands of human hair.

Pearls, along with colored gemstones like garnets, rubies and sapphires, were widely used in Georgian jewelry. These were often cut in the shape of a cabochon or teardrop. It was fashionable to combine garnets or rubies with seed pearls. In Georgian diamond rings, popular cuts for diamonds included rose, old mine and table. Around the 1780s, paste jewelry, or hand-cut glass on foil, was used to imitate diamonds.

A fine and impressive antique George V 9 karat yellow gold pocket watch; part of our diverse antique jewellery and estate jewelry collections. This fine and impressive antique pocket watch has been crafted in 9k yellow gold. This antique pocket watch is fitted with a circular antique white face ornamented with black hour Roman numerals and encircled with a plain black chapter ring of minute markers. The watch face further incorporates a seconds subdial to the lower portion. The manual wind watch is fitted with blue steel watch hands; these functional hands are operated by drawing the winder out and turning accordingly. The watch face is framed within a plain yellow gold case, accented with a ribbed crown/winder to one side. The pocket watch features a plain ring loop attachment, conjoining the body to either side of the winder. The watch face is visible via an incorporated push fit catch; operated by depressing the crown/winder. The push fit caseback opens to reveal a plain compartment, to allow a personal memento to be stored within if so desired. This back portion features a secondary cover which opens to reveal the original mechanism, crafted by the renowned horologist company Waltham; this calibre bears the markings 'A.W.W.Co', 'Waltham Mass' and '17 Jewels'. A stunning antique 10.97 carat aquamarine and 1.57 carat topaz, 1.42 carat diamond and platinum necklace; part of our diverse antique jewelry and estate jewelry collections. This stunning, fine and impressive antique pendant has been crafted in platinum. The drop style pendant has a scalloped edged, pierced decorated quatrefoil design, ornamented to the center with a claw set round mixed cut aquamarine. The millegrain decorated setting is embellished with four bezel set Old European round cut and eighty-eight pavé set Dutch cut diamonds. The feature setting suspends from a four claw set 1.57Ct cushion cut blue topaz via two articulated linear drops. The articulated linear drops are each set with three bezel set Old European round cut diamonds. The pendant suspends from a 17" fine belcher chain via two ring loops to the upper border of the topaz setting, securing with a conventional spring loaded bolt ring fastening to the reverse.
