Antique Early 19th Century Cut-Steel Necklace
Located in Malmö, SE
Cut steel jewelry was at the height of fashion from the mid 1700s well into the 19th century. Originated in the 1700s. Popular from the Georgian through the Victorian eras. To make cut steel, melted horseshoe nails were formed into tiny faceted beads. Those small steel gemstone-like studs were then riveted one-by-one onto a base plate. It was an English invention that quickly travelled throughout the world. Each stud could have up to 15 facets, and in general the finer and older the piece the more facets the studs will have. Improvements in candles meant that grand events and entertaining could take place at night. As diamonds are diamonds and not available for everyone, and everyone wanted to shine, the popularity grew. Cut-steel provided a stylish and popular new jewelry material that could be enjoyed by everyone at all levels of society. It grew beyond a simple imitation to an art in its own right. The manufacturing was complex and the workmanship that was required highly skilled. These were not mass produced objects. The studs were made from decarbonated cast steel, which was case-hardened, then the studs were faceted by cutting against a pewter wheel. Next were then polished with first fine emery and a hard brush, and then by hand with a special putty. Finally they were riveted onto pierced base plates which had to be drilled and cut by hand, too. The main place of cut steel production was Birmingham, England. And there, one manufacturer stood out from all the rest: Matthew Boulton. He had been born in 1728 into the industry — his father manufactured small metal products. But the younger Boulton had a special talent for marrying the latest technology with the latest fashion. He also was continually expanding — he even founded a mint. He wined and dined with dignitaries and advocated for his steel products. Fortuitously, he became quite close with the Russian ambassador to Catherine the Great. When the ambassador toured the mint, Boulton made sure to send the Empress some of his cut-steel necklaces. In 1759, Louis XV “encouraged” the nobility to donate their gold and gemstone jewelry to help fund the Seven Years War. The popularity of cut steel in France may in part have been due to these sumptuary laws which limited who could wear precious metals and diamonds. Either you complied with the law and gave up your family jewels to be melted down for the war chest...

Old XIXth BROOCH, Enamels, Silver, Vermeil, Antik BROOCH, Burgundy France
Located in SAINT-CLOUD, FR
OLD BROOCH early 19th century, antique brooch, in Georgian French enamel and vermeil silver. Brooch is decorated with an enamel motif typical of the town of Bourg-en-Bresse, in the region of Burgundy, France. French jewel from the Restoration period in France, Georgian period, between 1819 and 1838. dimensions: width 5 cm, height 4.5 cm, weight 14 g, good condition for its age, but I think the clasp needle is not original (hence the price, which is always negotiable). Bressan enamels are traditional jewels exclusively made in Bourg-en-Bresse in the department of Ain, they are made of enamel, fine particles of gold, all set on a mount. The Bressan tradition dates the origin of this technique back to the 14th century from 1397 when an enameller from the city, Master Guillaume, was entrusted with the sword of Amédée VIII of Savoy to decorate the pommel and the scabbard. This regional jewel, intimately linked to the traditional Bressan costume, reached its peak in the years 1800 to 1900, both in their creation and in their distribution. In the middle of the 19th century, the Bressan goldsmiths Amédée Bonnet and Amédée Fornet gave new impetus to these regional creations. In their workshops in Bourg-en-Bresse, they initiated a new genre, incorporating enamel plates, gold sequins, enamel beads and filigree arabesques into colored backgrounds. Freres Rochat Gold Bird Box
Located in New York, NY
Freres Rochat Gold Bird Box This stunning gold box was created by Frères Rochat circa 1820. At first glance, it may seem like a well-crafted, beautifully designed snuff box with a pearl floral motif on top. However, it holds a hidden surprise - a technical marvel of a singing, rotating bird! The button on the rim opens up the lid to reveal the intricately crafted bird that sings and rotates. It's a wonder how the complex mechanical mechanisms fit into such a small space. This antique box is truly extraordinary and a testament to the skill and craftsmanship of the Rochat brothers. About Freres Rochat: Frères Rochat is a Swiss company that was founded in the early 19th century by Antoine and Samuel Rochat, two brothers who came from a long line of skilled watchmakers. The company quickly gained a reputation for producing some of the finest mechanical timepieces and automata of the time, including singing bird boxes, which they became particularly renowned for. The Rochat brothers' innovative designs and engineering prowess made them highly sought after by wealthy collectors and royalty alike. They were commissioned to create bespoke pieces for many high-profile clients, including Napoleon Bonaparte and the Russian Tsar, Alexander I. In the mid-19th century, Frères Rochat was taken over by another watchmaking family, the Favres, who continued to produce exquisite automata and timepieces in the same tradition. The company continued to flourish, with many of their creations being displayed in museums around the world. Today, Frères Rochat is still regarded as one of the foremost names in luxury watchmaking and mechanical automata. Their antique singing bird boxes are highly prized by collectors and connoisseurs, and the company continues to produce exceptional timepieces and other mechanical creations to this day. France 1810 Georgian Period Rare Oversized Baroque Brooch .830 Silver Quartz
Located in Miami, FL
Fantastic Oversized antique French brooch. A very nice early French piece, created during the Georgian period, around the 1810's. Carefully crafted in solid .830/1000 sterling silver and suited at the reverse, with a hinged horizontal pin with a hook lock. Is embellished, with a mix of larger quartz gems cuts and small simulated gemstones in paste. Excellent workmanship with black dots and prong set on top of the silver with open backs. Paste, is a gem like material made from a secret formula of leaded glass invented by George Ravenscroft, a 17th century London glassmaker and later perfected by George Strass, an 18th century French jeweler, designed to resemble precious gemstones. This piece is pretty heavy and large with a total weight of 87.4 grams and a measures of 90 mm by 83 mm (3.52 by 3.28 inches).
