Antique Jade Plaque Art Nouveau Certified Untreated

About the Item

This antique jade plaque dates to approximately 1890-1900. It was hand-carved and polished using pre-industrial revolution methods and it maintains its original sumptuous polish. The 51.64mm x 37.25mm rectangular plaque has been carved to depict a moth on both sides. Moths are of historic symbolic importance in the Chinese culture, as they represent loved ones who are no longer here with us. The moth, then, is our spiritual connection to the past and all we loved. The stone is remarkable: a nearly colorless white that has been splashed with the finest, richest "imperial" green. This pendant is so visually striking that when I first encountered it and had not yet held it in my hand, I suspected it had been dyed. The green was just too perfectly emerald green, the and there was just a tiny splash here and over there. It was simply too artistically composed to be natural. But then as soon as I held it in my hands I knew it was indeed completely natural. The carved plaque and jade bead were originally on a broken silk cord, which is pictured in the gemological laboratory certificate. The plaque has been restrung onto a strong silky white cord that measures approximately 24" and is slightly adjustable by sliding the two knots closer together. The 10.33mm round jadeite bead is the original bead and appears to have been cut from the same section of stone. This is a startlingly beautiful and completely authentic antique Chinese Burmese jadeite jade carving and it has no cracks, chips, or damage of any kind. The plaque ships with a certificate from Stone Group Labs stating that the jade is untreated jadeite from Burma (Myanmar).
