Ancient Greek 3rd Century BC Alexander the Great Coin Diamonds 22K Gold Pendant

About the Item

A high-grade authentic ancient silver tetradrachm coin from Thrace (a historical region which now encompasses parts of Greece, Bulgaria and Turkey) minted in 297-281 BC, with a depiction of Alexander the Great is set in a handmade 22K gold multi-spirals bezel with five 1.8 mm accent VS1 diamonds in this Steven Battelle design. This coin was minted by the King Lysimachus who had previously been Alexander's bodyguard. After Alexander's death, his territories were divided into 4 parts, and Lysimachus became ruler of Thrace. This coin shows Alexander clean shaven, with the "horns of Ammon" symbolic of his posthumous deification. These “horns of Ammon” symbolize Alexander’s claim that he was the son of the Egyptian god Ammon—a claim reportedly confirmed by the oracle at the sanctuary of Zeus-Ammon at Siwa, Egypt. On the reverse of the coin, Lysimachus exerts his own royal autonomy by naming himself “king.” The goddesses Athena and Nike (Greek for “victory”) crown his name with laurels, which symbolized victory or honor. The lion on the shield at Athena’s side references Lysimachus’s famous exploit of killing a lion with his bare hands and reinforces his association with Alexander, who used the skin of the Nemean lion as a symbol of power and courage. This pendant comes with a laminated coin certificate of authenticity. The chain shown is not included but can be ordered additionally.

  • Ancient Greek 3rd Century BC Seleucid Elephants Coin 22K Gold Diamonds Pendant
    By Steven Battelle
    Located in Soquel, CA
A rare and authentic silver "tetradrachm" coin from Seleukos I Nikator 312-281 BC depicts Athena driving a "quadriga" (a chariot) pulled by 4 horned elephants. Seleucus was a Macedonian Greek general who was one of the successors of Alexander the Great. In the power struggles that followed Alexander's death, he became ruler of Asia Minor, Syria, Mesopotamia, and the Iranian Plateau, eventually assuming the title of basileus (king). The state he established on these territories, the Seleucid Empire, was one of the major powers of the Hellenistic world, until being overcome by the Roman Republic and Parthian Empire in the late second and early first centuries BC. In 306 BC Seleucus attempted to invade India, and in the subsequent settlement with the Mauryan Emperor Chandragupta, he obtained 500 war elephants which were later used in campaigns in the west. Although no "quadrigas" were ever actually pulled by 4 elephants, Seleukos chose to use this image on his coinage. The opposite side of the coin features Zeus, king of the gods. This is an extremely rare coin not usually seen in jewelry. It is set in a signature handmade Steven Battelle 22K gold hammered...
