Antique Edwardian 5 Carat Australian Black Opal Brooch Pendant Yellow Gold 1900s

About the Item

Antique Edwardian Australian Lightning Ridge Harlequin Precious Black Opal and White Opal Brooch / Pendant in 18 Karat Yellow Gold, early 1900s, English, cased, attributed to English goldsmiths and silversmiths Butt & Co. Ltd. This bar brooch features a rare natural and solid precious black opal which exuberates rarity and brilliance: its symmetrical oval shape and dark bodycolor set the stage for it to display every color of the rainbow, red being the rarest and the most evident one in this jewel, in a desirable mix of harlequin, flagstone and broadflash patterns. And judging by the sand spots to reverse, this gem is extremely likely to have originated from the legendary Lightning Ridge region in Australia. This piece of jewelry is further accented to each shoulder with a similarly shaped solid white opal of equally stunning pinfire play-of-color, contrasting beautifully with the central gem. This jewel is fit with a pin, C-shape clasp and safety bar brooch fitting and with a hoop which allows it to be worn vertically as a pendant on a chain. Central black opal: approximately 5.0 carats (16.5 x 12.4 x 3.86 mm). Side white opals: approximately 2.9 carats (12.3 x 9.3 x 4.06 mm); approximately 3.3 carats (12.5 x 9.5 x 4.46 mm). Dimensions: 6.2 x 1.6 cm. Gross weight: 6.6g. Marked “18ct” for 18-karat gold. This jewel is fitted in a case by Butt & Co. Ltd. NOTE: This brooch can be converted into a black opal ring and a pair of white opal earrings upon request. If converted, the sale is final without any obligation from our end to accept a refund or exchange. Butt & Co. Ltd. was established in 1783, but its origins date back to 1703. By 1880 the firm was in the hands of Francis Butt, and by 1897, Alfred Wathew Butt. Alfred was also noted as being the Chairman of the Shrewsbury silversmiths, Robinson & Co. in 1904. By 1906 the firm had been converted into a limited liability company with Samuel Barnett noted as managing director. They became part of the Mappin & Webb group in 1968. The central gemstone is an Australian fine black opal from Lightning Ridge in New South Wales, Australia. Their distinctive quality is their "play of color," a phenomenon which manifests in opals' colors, shifting and changing as the gems move. Australian opals, in general, are the quality benchmark in the world family of opals owing to their durability and beauty. This particular opal is outstanding for its particularly broad range of the rainbow colours it exhibits (from vivid red to intense yellow, orange, green, blue, violet and purple), the defined patterns exhibited (this opal is particularly unusual for its large, rolling flashes of red, which is the rarest colour in opal, and also for the patchwork pattern in which these different colors of the rainbow appear, reminiscent of the most highly-valued Harlequin opals) and its brightness. Given the rarity of gathering all these factors in a single opal, this could be easily defined as a one-of-a-kind piece of jewelry with unique beauty. This item is in good condition, with marks and scratches consistent with general age and wear. Antique, period and vintage pieces, both signed and unsigned, are being offered as worn. Unless otherwise stated, all weights and quality factors have been graded as mounting permitted and using classic gemology and standard gemological equipment. Assessments related to period of manufacture or geographic origin of gemstones are expert opinions and may differ from the assessments provided by other professionals. Colors in the pictures/videos might slightly differ from the colors in real life.
