Carlo Giuliano Lilac Enamel and Pearl Cross Pendant
About the Item
A Carlo Giuliano enamel and pearl cross pendant, the central pearl set to the a lilac and white enamelled flower, in the centre of a fine pierced latticework with white and black enamelled decoration, all surrounded by a lilac enamelled frame, terminating to black and white enamelled scroll decorations with three pearl drops, suspended from a lilac enamel pendant loop, overall dimensions 8.0 cm by 5.1cm, signed CG circa 1860, gross weight 11.2 grams.
This cross pendant is in very good condition. Unmarked, tested as 18ct gold.
An impressive and wonderfully crafted cross pendant. This piece was made by Carlo Giuliano, who was known for his intricate renaissance-revival jewellery, which featured fine enamel work and gem-set decorations. Examples of his jewellery are in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and others. This fine cross features delicate latticework detail in the inside of the cross frame. At the centre of the cross is a lovely lilac and yellow gold enamelled flower, set with a lustrous pearl. The boarder of the cross features the same lilac enamel with gold details, and the inside and outside details of the cross feature black and white enamel, which Giuliano frequently used in his work. This piece comes from the collection of Bentley & Skinner, the London jewellers by appointment to both Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales and is an excellent example of Giuliano’s style and craftsmanship.
