Antique Coral and Old Cut Diamond Beaded Necklace
About the Item
An antique 19th century natural red coral two-strand beaded necklace set with a round clasp featuring beautiful diamonds. The clasp is embellished with a total of seventeen old cut diamonds all set in a cluster around the center diamond. The floral shaped frame of the clasp is created in silver and detailed with a rim of 14 karat gold, where the diamonds are set in uplifting dome shaped figures. On the sides of the round clasp are also two crescent-shaped silver parts belonging to the clasp - the so-called "crabs" - beautifully inlaid with three old cut diamonds each.
The two strands are strung with barrel-shaped coral stones, with a size of approximately 9 millimeter in diameter. To protect the coral from rubbing against each other the threads is knotted between each coral, which also gives it a more beautiful appearance. These kind of necklaces were worn by West Frisian women in the northern part of The Netherlands in circa 1880-1900.
The coral necklace is in very good condition and of high quality. The clasp is tested as 14 karat gold and silver.
