Precious Topaz Pendant with Diamond

About the Item

A pear-cut precious topaz the color of fine aged whiskey is crowned with a tiny brilliant diamond and suspended from a delicate white gold chain. The topaz is natural and measures approximately 10mm x 7.13mm and weighs just over 2-carats (2.14). The 2.33mm diamond is a very pale yellow: a nice, subtle touch. When most people think of topaz, they think of those vibrant blue gems. Almost all blue topaz achieves that fine blue color through commercial irradiation, which leaves the gemstones radioactive and in need of a "cooling down" period. This does not appeal to me, so I had never been interested in topaz because I didn't know: there is precious topaz, there is imperial topaz, there is even natural blue topaz (though whether it's been irradiated can't be determined in the lab). Traditionally, "precious topaz" describes fine topaz of the color you see here, while "imperial topaz" refers to topaz that is naturally pink. The Duchess of Cornwall is especially fond of imperial topaz, I hear. In case you're keeping track of that sort of thing. The gem and diamond are both securely prong-set in their 14k white gold handmade basket setting. The pendant ships with the 18" 14K white gold chain you see here. No, it's not a huge and flashy gem. No, it's probably not what you would wear on the red carpet. But it's unusual because precious and imperial topaz are both rare. And if you love the warm whiskey-color or if topaz is your birthstone and maybe you'd like a stone that wasn't irradiated blue, this could be perfect for you. This is a classic, delicate pendant you can wear every day. I purchased it in the Midwestern United States many years ago when I was on a book tour. I bought it at a mom-and-pop jewelry store where everything was carefully handmade using quality stones. I've always loved looking at this little pendant. It's never dark or "extinct." It's beautiful in all lighting and from certain angles, you get flashes of copper, pink and orange. It's spare, beautiful and rare. It's a unisex pendant that could be worn by anyone.
