About the Item

Just like garments, jewellery, too, has traditionally been subject to the changes and seasons of fashion. In the late 19th century, for instance, women preferred to wear no earrings or very small ones: „Pendant earrings are not as popular as they used to be; but small ones are still being worn. One pearl, a large diamond close to the earlobe, and at most one suspended gemstone are entirely sufficient“, wrote the influential German ladies' journal Bazar in 1897 (transl. from Der Bazar. Illustrirte Damen-Zeitung, 43/1897, No. 43, p. 577). This changed in the years around 1910, as long, resplendent pendant earrings such as the ones at hand grew fashionable again – the reason for this being that they ideally matched how women did their hair at the time. Other than in the 1890s, hair was no longer strictly pinned back; fashionable ladies preferred soft, voluminous updos, with hair curling around the nape, forehead and ears. Earrings needed to be long to be noticeable, and noticeable is what fine jewellery strove to be in those years. Accordingly, this fine pair of earrings focuses on the pendent drops rather than the much simpler top parts. These drops are framed by a halo of diamonds, and filled with – it seems – a suspended flower made of diamonds. Two large old European cut diamonds of approx. 1.40 ct respectively 1.90 ct take centre stage. Overall, 5.41 ct of diamonds are set onto every surface, turning the earrings into a spectacle of lights once they are worn and swing lightly beneath their wearer's lobes. With their floral references, and gleaming in ethereal white, the earrings are textbook examples of the so-called garland style that dominated fine jewellery production during the years of the Belle Époque. Delicate millegrain settings and fine openwork details bear witness to the unsurpassed quality of craftsmanship practised at the time. The earrings are in excellent condition, and their materials have been certified by a renowned gemological institute.
