Transformable jewelry is not a new idea, but its variations still feel incredibly innovative. This Vourakis set of earrings echoed convertible modular jewelry that has been widely popular at various times throughout the 20th century, especially in the 1920s-30s and again in the 1950s-60s when even the finest French Maisons produced some of the most innovative and chic transformable jewels. Vourakis, based in Greece, has specialized in custom handmade high jewelry in the French tradition for nearly 100 years since 1926. This world-renowned house, one of the "big three" in Greece, is highly sought-after for its magnificent designs and exceptional workmanship. It is often compared with the work of Van Cleef & Arpels, for whom Vourakis produced jewels in the 1950s and 1960s.
These Vourakis Vintage Retro Revival Diamond Pearl Drop Earrings, made in the 20th century, have a sleek and opulent Art Deco design and allow the wearer to change out the delicate dangling gemstone drops from pearl to diamond and back again. The ear clips finished with hinged backs are designed in mirror image symmetry to frame the face gracefully. Crafted in platinum, the design features lyrical scrollwork composed of ribbons of baguette diamonds accented by round brilliant-cut diamonds of various sizes, which start at the earlobe and follow their curve dramatically upward.
Two sets of interchangeable drops elegantly balance the composition, one more beautiful than the other, and each with so much exquisite detail. One option is a pair of oval-shaped white cultured pearls accented with dangling baguette diamonds. Each stone is held with two prongs and topped with rectangular step-cut diamonds. The drop connects with a loop to create a full range of flirtatious movements. Mirroring the shape of the pearls are a pair of faceted and sparkling pear-shaped diamonds with an estimated weight of 3.76 carats total. These are each accented above with three floating round brilliant-cut diamonds. The total diamond weight for the earrings is an estimated 11.00-12.00 carats and provides radiant sparkle and shimmer.
