Modernist C.1950 Sam Kramer Sterling Silver & Garnet Cufflinks

$595

About

Sam Kramer was an eccentric innovator of modernist jewelry design in mid century New York and is often cited by his fellow artisans as one of the most important metalsmiths of his time. His work was often surrealist and appealed to both the beat generation and collectors of early modernism. These sterling silver cufflinks are a wonderful example of his work incorporating both modernism and machine age characteristics that are as appealing today as when they came out of his studio in Greenwich Village. They have a chunky aesthetic and are accented with a cabochon garnet that subtly glows when touched by light. The toggles on both links are signed with the Kramer mushroom hallmark and one toggle is also marked 'STERLING'. They are truly unique wearable sculptures. CONDITION The cufflinks have not been polished and show light scratching to the surface and darkened patina especially around the garnet setting. Both garnets show surface flaws that might be a characteristic of the stone when first set and are shown in photographs 11 and 12. MEASUREMENTS Each cufflink measures .75" square and is 1.25" deep with the toggle fully extended.
