About the Item

Floral branches, fashioned from dozens of gleaming diamonds in a bed of gold and silver, were a preferred ornament of the Belle Époque in the late years of the 19th century. The floral brooch at hand takes up this motif – yet the cuts of its diamonds as well as some subtle stylistic characteristics tell us that it was made later, probably in the years around 1950. In Southern Europe, in Spain but also in Portugal, the makers of jewellery looked to the formal vocabulary of the Belle Époque well up to the middle of the 20th century. The brooch illustrates this circumstance perfectly. In an elegant arrangement, seemingly as if by chance, it is composed in the shape of a small bouquet. The leaves, the petals and the centers of the blooming flowers are lavishly set with diamonds amounting to overall approx. 5.40 ct. The diamonds have been cut in variations of the brilliant cut: the old European cut of the early 20th century, the transitional brilliant cut used just before the middle of the 20th century, as well as full brilliant cuts. The diamonds stand out brilliantly before the darkened silver, overlaid onto rose-tinted gold. The technique of setting diamonds into blackened silver, thus emphasizing their brightness, is an old one: Benvenuto Cellini (1500–1571, Florence) already mentioned it in his treatise on the goldsmith's art. A splendid floral brooch with rich historical references, this piece is in excellent condition and as decorative as it is beautifully made.
