A Victorian sapphire and diamond brooch, ca. 1880s.
The brooch is designed in the form of an eye. Hereby the iris is set with a cushion shaped sapphire, weighing circa 9 carats. It is of Ceylon origin and natural (not heated), with a beautiful violetish blue colour and small colourful rutile inclusions, which are typical for Ceylon sapphires. The rest of the eye is aesthetically set with fine old cut cushion diamonds, weighing circa 5-6 carats.
The brooch could also be modified to be worn as a gem set eye pendant. Any way, either as a brooch or as a pendant, the evil eye is commonly worn as an amulet or talisman in order to shield oneself and repel evil curses and misfortune. Thus the symbolism this brooch carries, along with its history and fine gemstones, makes it very attractive part of any jewellery collection.
