About the Item

Unheated gemstones are rarities on today's market, making this 9.80 carat blue sapphire in its artful Belle Époque setting a veritable jewel. Due to a pin and retractable bail, the piece can be worn both as a brooch and a pendant. The quality of the natural sapphire shows in its transparency as well as in its natural mid-blue colour. Gemstones such as this one are not merely serendipitous finds, but likewise guarantee stable values due to their rarity. This particular example, found and likely even cut in former Ceylon - then a Crown colony of the British Empire - inspired a maker of fine jewellery to turn it into this pendant-brooch in the years around 1900. Overall 47 diamonds in historical cuts, each of them individual, make up a double frame separated by contrasting bands of midnight blue enamel. In their midst, the sapphire lies embedded like a pool of ocean water. It is set in gold whilst the diamond settings are made of silver, so as not to compromise their colour.
