Mid-Victorian Bird Brooch

About the Item

A mid-Victorian bird brooch, the bird pave-set throughout with natural seed pearls set in yellow gold closed-back settings, holding a pearl-set acorn motif with rose-cut diamond cap from its beak, with yellow gold brooch fitting, circa 1850, measuring approximately 2.8x2.1cm, gross weight 7.7 grams. This antique brooch is in very good condition, with a later added pin. Unmarked tested as 18ct gold, pin tested as 9ct gold, the acorn tested as silver. This wonderful and dainty brooch comes from the collection of Bentley & Skinner, the London jewellers by appointment to both Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. Victorian jewellery was often highly symbolic, and birds in particular were of great symbolism. Queen Victoria was known to gift bird brooches to friends as a symbol of love and sentiment. This sweet brooch would be a perfect accessory adorning a silk scarf, jacket lapel, or blouse collar. Should you choose to make this purchase we would be delighted to send it to you in a Bentley & Skinner handmade leather case packed in a gift-wrapped Bentley & Skinner black and gold presentation box. Shortly afterwards we will send you on a valuation for insurance purposes for your reference and safekeeping.
