Sterling Inscribed Biblical "Mizpah" Bangle, circa 1880

About the Item

Sentimental sterling bangle bracelet bearing the biblical Mizpah inscription, signifying an emotional bond between two people physically separated due to acts of war or other calamities. It would typically be given by a lover about to be parted from his beloved. The word "Mizpah" is in raised lettering while the engraved inscription "The Lord When Between We are Me & Absent One Thee From Another" is inscribed beneath. The inscription is flanked by a carved shield and a single flower with attached leaves on either side. The literal meaning of Mizpah is "watchtower" or "lookout" in Hebrew, and references the covenant between Jacob and Laban and is referenced in the Old Testament, Genesis 31:49. Such a bracelet would be given to someone as a token of love or friendship. The Mizpah inscription is engraved on the front of the bracelet. The Mizpah bangle is hallmarked to the year 1911, Birmingham, England, and measures 7 1/4 in. diameter along the outside and 1 inch wide.
