Flexible Woven Yellow Gold Cuff Bracelet with Single Cut Diamonds, circa 1960

About the Item

In its former life, this was a ladies' hidden dial watch. These types of watches -- more jewelry than timepiece and frequently quite over-the-top -- were popular in the 1950's and 1960's. The idea was to conceal an itty bitty watch behind a little door or flap or garnish that seamlessly matched the underlying bracelet. So won't your friends be amazed when, at the pop of a button, you're able to look down at your beautiful gold and diamond bracelet and SEE WHAT TIME IT IS! Except you CAN'T see what time it is because the you can't read the itty bitty watchface without strong light and reading glasses. Furthermore, since these were mechanical watches, they could (and did) have incredibly small faces but were always a bit on the thick side, so the housing hiding the watch would inevitably create a bulge. An idea whose time came and went. Basically, in our era of larger watches, smart watches, or no watches at all, THIS watch was getting in the way of a perfectly awesome bracelet. We therefore removed the watch and its gold mesh housing. Without these components, we're left with a gorgeous and substantial bracelet -- flexible with a sexy rounded surface. The diamond bars are white gold and the stones are little pavé-set single cuts -- about 0.14 carats in total. The closure is a box clasp with a figure eight safety catch. Measurements: Width: just under 3/4" Length: 6-3/4" (This bracelet fits wrists up to 6-¾") Marks: Both the tongue and the box are stamped "14K." The tongue is also stamped "G," which is probably the mark of the maker of the strap, not the watch. Weights: Bracelet: 43.7 grams Diamonds: approximately 0.14 carats
