About the Item

Inspired by the flamboyant beauty of the Parrot Tulip, the Big Tulip Ring blooms over the hand, for a unique take on a cocktail ring. The ring’s petals are designed in 18k white and yellow gold with blackened gold detailing, and embellished with brown and white diamonds and green tsavorites. And a host of life lives within the petals. A tiny, blackened silver human head sits among the flower’s pistils, while a moonstone symbolises a water droplet, and a carved rock crystal maggot and blackened silver ants crawl over and under the petals, with one of the ants guarding its seed pearl eggs. The ring’s stem-shaped shank is also detailed, embellished with green tsavorites, with a moonstone to represent where the stem has been cut. From whichever angle it’s seen, this ring delights. The Memento Mori collection is inspired by the grotesque and the beautiful in the still life paintings of the Dutch Golden Age, and draws on the way in which these works would contrast natural beauty and its inevitable decay. The collection’s bold designs capture flamboyant tulips and leaves in 18k yellow gold and rock crystal, such as one tulip ring that almost spans the hand, with these regal blooms grounded by ants, caterpillars, and maggots that nibble on their beautiful forms, as a poignant reminder of mortality. The creator of this piece, Bibi van der Velden, believes that jewellery should imbue the wearer with energy, with her pieces offering a playful, personal, and highly artistic take on fine jewellery. This personal touch comes from a jewellery-making process that’s grounded in traditional craftsmanship. Working with sustainable and unexpected materials, among them 60,000-year-old mammoth tusk, ostrich eggs, and scarab wings, Bibi hand-sketches and hand-carves each piece in wax. Bibi describes her jewellery pieces as “miniature sculptures.”
