About

Stuart gold posy ring 'Liue holy and dye happy'. The D-shape band is engraved with a stylised skeleton, the head and torso with a saltire with rounded ends to each side, each representing a pair of arms or legs, with traces of white enamel, inscribed to the interior 'Liue holy and dye happy M P', approximately 2.9mm in width, approximately 2.3g in weight. Tested yellow gold, indistinct maker's mark, circa 1600-1700 AD. UK finger size Q. Accompanied by documentation from the Portable Antiquities Scheme and the British Museum stating that this ring was found in Birmingham, UK in 2014, and recorded by the Portable Antiquities Scheme under reference WMID-6ABC41 and disclaimed as Treasure under the Treasure Act, reference 2014T233. There is no recorded example of this posy, or any like it recorded- see Evans, J., 'English Posies and Posy Rings', 1931.
