William Spratling Bracelet is Important Posthumous Piece for Completist

About the Item

If you have even a slight interest in the jewelry created during the Mexican Modernist movement, this bracelet may well look familiar to you. Hector Aguilar created this bracelet in the 1940s and it has since become an iconic piece from the brilliance that exploded out of Taxco, Mexico. But this particular bracelet was not created by Hector Aguilar; it was created by the man he worked for —the man responsible for igniting the Mexican Modernist movement itself— American architect and designer, William Spratling. It was created circa 1979. William Spratling died in 1967. To any William Spratling collector, the hallmarks on this piece tell the whole story: the slightly incorrect "WS" circle logo and then the tell-tale words, "TS24." William Spratling died in a car accident. Following his death, his home, brand and all his designs were purchased by Alberto Ulrich, an Italian art dealer. Ulrich Preserved the legacy of William Spratling and after he died, his daughter took over the company and began designing her own pieces. Her name is Violante Ulrich and her work will send your jaw dropping to the floor. She might even be the most brilliant designer to emerge from Spratling's astonishing and magnificent initial bonfire. I am not sure why Hector Aguilar's iconic bracelet was re-created by the new William Spratling company in 1979 but it was and here it is: probably the only one you will ever see. I purchased it from the woman who bought it in Mexico. An iconic William Spratling design? No. Ironic is more like it. And if you could not care any less about William Spratling, that's totally fine. Because this is an awesome bracelet. It's beautifully constructed, nice and weighty and really clever. An important piece of the William Spratling story? Oh, absolutely. The bracelet measures 7.5" but the clasp is long and requires room to hook itself around the bar, so the bracelet would fit a 6.5" or smaller wrist.
