About the Item

Antonio Piñeda on Silver: "It is subtle and has the nobility of the white metal, which is an invitation to touch and to achieve the timeless work of an artist. The challenge is part of the artist's inspiration." This magnificent and rare sculptural bracelet was created by one of the most defining and influential iconic artists of the so-called Mexican Modernist Movement, Antonio Piñeda, at his workshop in Taxco (pronounced Tasso), Mexico in or around 1953. A former protege of William Spratling—who launched the Mexican Modernist Movement in a then-defunct silver town of Taxco in 1931—Piñeda struggled at first to find his own identity as an artist and ways not to merely replicate the pre-Columbian-inspired works of his former mentor. After moving through a creative process of imitation, then influence, Piñeda had a creative breakthrough and began designing with angular, geometric forms. At first, he used blinding-white silver (the most reflective precious metal) and black stones like onyx. He eventually included more stones and more metals into his compositional palate but he did not stray from his original vision of bold, strong lines juxtaposed with natural stones set in completely new ways. This piece is composed of ten trapezium-shaped silver segments into which are set hand-carved and high-polish convex slabs of onyx. Brief concave rectangular "joints" connect each of the main segments, creating a bracelet that is strikingly innovative in its construction and stone setting methodology let alone its sheer beauty as a geometric form. The world has realized that the jewelers of the Mexican Modernist Movement created art, not merely crafts, so the demand for important pieces such as this bracelet has increased dramatically over the last several years. This is sophisticated and impeccably tasteful, gorgeously and solidly constructed. It is properly hallmarked and has its original safety chain intact. The bracelet is the epitome of chic, partly because it doesn't come across as "vintage" or "modernist." Instead, it reads as "timelessly elegant," as "architectural," as "extraordinary." This bracelet has obviously been owned since its creation by someone with knowledge and respect for exactly what they possessed, as it is in impeccable condition. It looks as if you've just strolled out of his Taxco shop and it's 1953 and you have your hair up in a chignon exactly like Tippi Hedron wore hers in The Birds. The bracelet is approximately 7.5 inches in length and will fit a wrist up to approximately 6.5 inches in diameter.
