Victorian Blue Enamel, Diamond and Pearl-Accented Snake Bracelet

About

A Victorian gold and blue enamel snake bracelet with diamonds and pearl. The old mine-cut diamonds have an approximate total weight of .40 carat. After Prince Albert gave Queen Victoria a snake band with an emerald head as a wedding present in 1839, snakes, particularly in a fully realized or continuous band form, came to be a symbol for eternal love and devotion during Victorian times. This particularly beautiful bracelet is given added significance with the use of the specific deep, rich tone of blue chosen for the enamel. In antiquity through the high Renaissance, this color of pigmentation was extremely expensive, as it was made from the crushed hard stone lapis lazuli. Thus, it was reserved for depiction of the Virgin Mary, the most important female figure in the lexicon of Western symbology at this time. Therefore, this beautiful work can be seen as a symbol of chaste, immortal love. Besides its symbolic value, this bracelet is also beautifully executed, with exquisite diamond-inlaid gold detail accenting the joints that allow for it to be comfortably worn, and a large half-pearl crowning the serpent's head. Circa 1870's. Dimensions: 6" internal circumference
