Paisley Paramecium is a playful design celebrating the micro-organisms that form the base of the pyramid of all life. The inspiration for this design was a play on the traditional tear-drop shape of the paisley motif resembling a unicellular organism called a paramecium. The species in this design are aquatic, including many free-floating plankton upon whom the health of all marine creatures, from fish fry to whales, depends. Phytoplankton are also of serious conservation concern - warming oceans have caused population declines of 40% since 1950. Change is desperately needed in how we perceive our interconnectedness within, and dependence upon, the web of life.
As well as evoking droplets of water, the design plays upon the conventions of the traditional paisley design. It is also reminiscent of stitching and lace, as the fabric of nature is fragile and intricately interwoven and embellished. The colouration is quite free as many of these species are really quite transparent.
With exquisite biological detail, it builds on the passion in interiors for honouring the natural world. Furthermore, for every roll of wallpaper sold, 100m2 of critical wild habitat is preserved through World Land Trust.
This is an eco-friendly fine gicleé digitally-printed “real” wallpaper. It is printed in the UK on a natural non-woven cellulose-based substrate made from recycled materials – recycled polyester (PET) fibre and recycled wood pulp. The production process is solvent free with minimal waste and energy inputs.

Based in England, Newton Paisley creates exquisitely detailed eco-friendly fabrics and wallpapers, all designed and hand-drawn by award-winning conservation biologist, Dr Susy Paisley. Each design brims with life and tells stories of neglected and endangered species. Even better, the products contributes toward the preservation of critical wild habitat. For every metre of fabric and roll of wallpaper sold, 100m2 of wild habitat is preserved through our collaboration with World Land Trust. For bespoke projects such as boutique hotels, the notable flora and fauna of specific sites are researched, illustrated and transformed into unique wall-coverings and textile designs. Founded in September 2016, Newton Paisley has already won several important awards, such as inclusion as Best in Show at the 2018 ICFF and one of Six Top New Products at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in NYC by Architectural Digest.
The Wallpaper can be produced as Non-woven 147gsm Coated or Uncoated. The Coated provides deeper colours, a more wipeable surface and a slight shine.
This design is available in double scale on wide width of 137cm. This paper has virtually double the coverage of the 70cm, and double the price. The dramatic large scale can be seen on the final image, after the medium scale.
All Newton Paisley designs are also produced as printed linen, suitable for drapery and upholstery.
