"Triumph of Rome," Bronze Relief Panel with Frieze of Roman Soldiers and Nudes

Beautifully detailed and masterfully cast and patinated, this bronze panel, probably from the late 19th or early 20th centuries, depicts a frieze of Roman soldiers at the end of battle, arrayed across the field with the forces they defeated either dead or bound. A woman is shown in a dead faint, and other vanquished figures are shown in the nude, barren of armor and dignity. It is not clear what battle this relief is depicting, though this may have been sculpted and cast in Sweden, and the scene may reflect a clash between Romans and the Germanic peoples of northern Europe.
