Léon Brard Trompe L'oeil Palissy Wall Plaque, Flounder on Rouen Plate

A trompe l’oeil wall plaque showing a flat flounder, another red fish and a small shell on a rustic cobalt blue and white platter, painted in the Rouen style. Signed Léon Brard, circa 1870-1880. Red earthenware, glazed in creamy white with the blue and sepia geometric pattern following a scalloped rim. In the oval center well, the dimensional fish are naturalistically modeled and painted. In 1859, Brard opened a studio in Tours to work in the Palissy style. As a former painter of marine still life, he developed a distinct style, rather then imitate the ceramics of Bernard Palissy. Book reference: ‘Palissy Ware’ by Marshall P. Katz and Robert Lehr Excellent antique condition.
