About

Conrad Hicks is an artist, blacksmith and tool-maker in Cape Town. He specialises in hand forged metal work, using only traditional blacksmithing jointing methods as he believes these are essential to the symbolic meaning of the finished form. He sees his artistic practice as an instinctive search for beauty. Working intuitively, he allows his materials and labour-intensive process to determine the final form. In the process of cutting, pressing, heating, hammering and stretching metal, he discovers an archetypal language that calls to mind ancient art forms. For the past 10 years, Conrad’s work has evolved to focus more on sculpture and one-off collectible pieces. He has exhibited with Southern Guild since 2013, when he was included in the influential Heavy Metal show at the Bronze Age Foundry in Woodstock. Since then he has shown to international audiences at design fairs such as Design Miami/ Basel, Design Days Dubai and Collective 1 in New York. He will hold his first solo with the gallery in May 2019. These forged copper discs, whose patinated texture bears the hammered marks of the artist, originated from a tool-making exercise. They are from Conrad's first solo exhibition at Southern Guild, 'Implement'.

About The Maker

Southern Guild

View Profile
Southern Guild has spearheaded the high-end design category in Africa, propelling its artist-designers to make spirited, challenging and complex work. Its highly curated exhibitions have redefined global perceptions of African design and escalated its value on the international market. Since being founded in 2008 as the sole gallery representing locally made limited-edition design, Southern Guild has birthed a new category for artists and designers in South Africa. In 2011 it became the first African gallery to present at Design Miami, and in 2015 it was the first to be featured at Christie’s London’s annual design auction. The gallery shows regularly at Design Miami in Basel and the US, at Design Days Dubai and the Collective Design Fair in New York, resulting in sales to leading architects, top collectors and respected museums. It has had work from its collections included in Vitra Design Museum’s “Making Africa” exhibition and “Beauty–Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial” at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. Against the backdrop of a design industry that is still fairly young, Southern Guild gives designers a platform to reimagine what is possible. Founders Trevyn and Julian McGowan are embedded in the South African cultural landscape and play integral roles in guiding, advising and mentoring designers.
