Neoclassical Cast Iron Relief of Day by Bertel Thorvaldsen

About the Item

The original reliefs night and day were executed by Thorvaldsen in 1815. Day personified flies actively across the sky with her head held high. She looks over her shoulder and fixes her gaze on the small torch-bearing boy here proudly symbolizing the light and the sun. This is a rare cast iron example, large scale at 22 inches square. Weight 25 pounds. The compositions are the most emblematic of Thorvaldsen’s relief sculptures and became an immediate success. The sculptor produced several versions for many famous people of his day such as Lord Lucan, Klemes von Metternich, François Gabriel de Bray and William Cavendish, 6th Duke of Devonshire.
