Rene Perrot Aubusson Tapestry

About the Item

Midcentury tapestry designed by Rene Perrot 91912-1979) and woven at Atelier Riviere des Borderies in Aubusson, France. Handwoven in wool, it dates to 1946 and entitled "Bestiaire". The artist's name and date are woven top left and the monogram for the atelier is woven bottom right. Rene Perrot was a member of "Les Rustiques", a group known for their rustic depictions of animals and nature. His pieces are characterized by proportionate and realistic portrayals of his subjects set within richly decorative settings. This tapestry depicts pairs of animals set within a background of vegetation that is reminiscent of the millefleurs tapestry of the medieval period.
