Spaniard Fan Shadow Box

About the Item

This is a wood sticks and handpainted Spaniard fan. It depicts four different scenes related to Spain. Starting in the left, there is a bullfighter fighting a bull in a bullring; then an 18th Century scene of a horse carriage with a lady inside it in a country landscape while some people sitting in the grass appear selling pottery; next, there is a bouquet of carnations (the national flower of Spain) and finally some women with flamenco dresses dancing in a square. The fan is saved in a fan shaped gilt wood shadow box. In the back, it is written that this fan was daily used by Dona Felisa since the last 15 years of her life. Dona Felisa Rincon de Gautier( Jan 1897- Sept 1994 ) was the first woman to be elected mayor of a city in the Americas and also of the city of San Juan, Puerto Rico from 1946-1968. She established the first preschoolers centers in the island that would serve as a model for the Head Start program in United States. She was also a Women's Right Activist. She was a very known fan's collector and an expert in the language of it.
