Antique Horse Print "The Stone Faceder" Signed by Snaffles, 1934

About the Item

This is a hand-colored, remarked and signed Charles Johnson Payne lithographic print, entitle: The Stone Faceder. The border area of the art is sign by the artist using his known pseudonym - Snaffles. The print depicts equestrian style riding in the Irish countryside. The art also features a hand-drawn fox running through brush leading one to believe this is an Irish fox hunting print. Born January 17, 1884 at Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, Charlie was the fourth of a boot-maker’s eight children and from his youth developed a passion for all things military. He tried to enlist in the army to fight in the Boer war, but was rejected on the grounds that he was too young. Eventually, he joined the Royal Garrison Artillery at the age of 18 as a gunner but in 1906 he was forced to leave because of illness. However, his time in the army was influential, as his first recorded works of semi-caricature portrait date from this time. His passion for hunting began at about this time in the Aldershot region. Invalided out of World War One, Payne took a job as a war artist for The Graphic and it was during these years that he produced some of his finest military work. After the war his work became more varied, although he still often contributed to The Sporting & Dramatic News. In 1912, Payne moved to Oakham, Rutland . His hunting in the Shires inspired his most famous print -The finest view in Europe. It was as a sporting artist that "Snaffles" built his reputation and, after the war, he worked on the hunting, shooting, polo, racing and fishing subjects which made his name. The Classic series of pig-sticking prints he completed in India in the 1920s are perhaps the images for which he is best known and his depictions of military life in the Raj are second to none. Snaffles built an element of humor into his work and the captions to his subjects were often as important as the artwork. Payne’s work was published in limited edition prints for nearly half a century, the early prints published in back and white and hand colored, the later were photographic color prints. Most all have a humorous inscription and are signed in pencil. A large number have print borders bearing an impressed mark of two interlocking snaffle bits. The prints almost always have a sentimental nostalgic theme. Manny of his original prints are now being reproduced again, as he carries his universal appeal into the 21st century. Unframed size: 19"x 17" Framed size: 21"x 19".

  • “On the Moors” or "Dogging" Signed by Heywood Hardy, Antique Print, 1894
    By Heywood Hardy
    Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Presented is an 1894 signed first edition goupil-gravure print by Heywood Hardy (1842-1933). The engraving was printed in Paris and published by Boussod Valadon & Co. Publishers, the successors to Goupil & Co. Designed as a companion to After the Drive, Hardy’s On the Moors (Dogging) depicts three hunters and their two dogs hunting ducks. The youngest of the three men is shooting his gun as the dogs excitedly wait to chase after the bird. This print is one of only 75 artist’s proofs and has been signed by the artist in pencil at the lower left corner of the print’s margin. Hunting has a long history in England and is considered a very traditional activity even today. One of the most popular forms of hunting is called “wildfowling” and targets wild geese and ducks. Often conducted on coastal marshes, wildfowling is typically a solitary or small group sport unlike the grand group fox and pheasant hunts...

  • "The Bicester & Warden Hill" by Frank Stewart, Vintage Signed Print, 1935
    By Frank Algernon Stewart
    Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Presented is an original fox hunting print signed by the artist, Frank Algernon Stewart (1877-1945). This print depicts one of England’s most famous fox hunting events, the Bicester and Warden Hill Hunt. The scene depicts six men on horseback galloping across a field in mid-hunt. All coloring is still intact, with lush green fields and bright riders’ jackets. As evidenced here, Stewart’s renderings of horseback hunts are some of the most celebrated and collected in the world. The beginnings of the Bicester Hunt started around the 1790s when John Warde Esq. bought a set of hounds and hunted in the Bicester area, with the main kennels located at Bainton. He hunted for 18 seasons. The first master of the Bicester Hunt was Sir Thomas Mostyn...
