Four Framed Early 19th Century Large Folio Engravings of Lizards, Snakes & Bats

About the Item

This set of four engravings in detail with compendium landscape details and related prey animals are done in steel engraved plates and come from the first quarter of the 19th century. Used as reference and educational material showing the great Expansion of the natural world. These works not only include the obvious visual image of the animal but show scale and related material of interest in an overview. Artistically produced with drama and visual appeal these works would have been not for just scientific study but for men of learning and the libraries of landed and educated men to show a well rounded and complete understanding of the planet and its inhabitants. The frames are good old examples of hand carved, bleached deal wood and with water gilded inner liners also have french hand colored mattes creating a total package of old world Gothic drama. These come from the estate of noted collectors of such material Arthur and Teddy Edelman. Having created an entire wall of design in their home this large set would do likewise in any client's home.
