Marc Chagall
Described by art critic Robert Hughes as "the quintessential Jewish artist of the twentieth century," the Russian-French modernist Marc Chagall worked in nearly every artistic medium. Influenced by Symbolism, Fauvism, Cubism and Surrealism, he developed his own distinctive style, combining avant-garde techniques and motifs with elements drawn from Eastern European Jewish folk art.
Born Moishe Segal in 1887, in Belarus (then part of the Russian empire), Chagall is often celebrated for his figurative paintings, but he also produced stained-glass windows for the cathedrals of Reims and Metz, in France; for the United Nations, in New York; and for the Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem, as well as book illustrations, stage sets, ceramics, tapestries and fine-art prints. Characterized by a bold color palette and whimsical imagery, his works are often narrative, depicting small-village scenes and quotidian moments of peasant life, as in his late painting The Flight into Egypt from 1980.
Before World War I, Chagall traveled between St. Petersburg, Paris and Berlin. When the conflict broke out, he returned to Soviet-occupied Belarus, where he founded the Vitebsk Arts College before leaving again for Paris in 1922. He fled to the United States during World War II but in 1947 returned to France, where he spent the rest of his life. His peripatetic career left its mark on his style, which was distinctly international, incorporating elements from each of the cultures he experienced.
Marc Chagall remains one of the past century’s most respected talents — find his art on 1stDibs.
- Mark King "Leopard" Expressionist Pencil Signed Limited Edition Serigraph FramedBy Mark King 1Located in Dayton, OHLeopard by Mark King. Expressionist serigraph on paper, signed lower right. Limited edition. Mark King, British (1931) Mark King was born in Bombay, India to British parents in 1931. King’s childhood was one of exotic experience and privileged education. After graduating from La Martiniére College in Calcutta, the sixteen-year-old King sailed to England to attend Bournemouth College of Art. There he studied painting, sculpture, architecture and theatre design. Subsequently, he spent seven years as the resident scenic designer at the Oxford Playhouse Theatre. In 1961, he decided to concentrate on painting, and he moved to Paris, where he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts and the Louvre. It was there that he developed his impressionistic style, influenced by the wealth of examples of European masters. Mark King describes his approach to painting as ninety percent preparation. “It takes a great deal of time for me but once I begin, I work with great impetus, with immense bursts of energy. It is not until the last ten or fifteen minutes before completion that I am able to see where the painting is going and to catch the mood of the moment.” Change has played an important role in both King’s art and life. “I have a need, artistically, for exposure to new ideas and images,” he says, and it was this need that brought him to America in 1968, a move that prompted a shift in his working methods. A landscape painter in France, King began to expand his subject matter to include sports. With his work as a sports artist King found the camera an indispensable tool, and began to work from photographs. Since coming to America...Category

Makielski titled "Huron River," showing a landscape view of the Huron river lined with trees. Beveled wood frame, white mat. "Leon A. Makielski (1885 - 1974) was active/lived in Michigan, Illinois. Leon Makielski is known for Landscape, portrait and still life painting, mural. Leon was born in Morris Run, Pennsylvania in 1885 and grew up in South Bend, Indiana. In the early 1900's he studied at the Art Institute of Chicago where by 1908 he became an instructor and was awarded the Institute's highest honor, the John Quincy Adams Traveling Scholarship. For the next four years Makielski studied in Paris and its environs. He was enrolled in the Academie Julian and the Grand Chaumiere both in Paris. He was a pupil of Henri Martin, Richard Miller, Lucien Simon and R. Menard. He exhibited in the Paris Salons of 1910 and 1911 and spent much of his time painting the countryside around Paris, especially Giverny and Versailles. "Undins's Pool", "Luxembourg Palace" and "Wildflowers, Giverny" are wonderful examples of his work during this period. William Gerdts cites Makielski in Monet's Giverny: "An Impressionist Colony" (Abbeville Press, 1993) as one of the most traditional of the second generation colonists who followed the lead of Theodore Robinson and other first generation Americans at Giverny. Makielski's training might have been earlier influenced by the Hoosier Impressionists active in Chicago during his training there, but the European experience clearly brought forth a style of its own. Makielski returned to South Bend in...Category
