"Adam and Eve on Island of Peace, " Remarkable WPA-Era Print of Peace Amidst War
About the Item
This print depicts a nude Adam and Eve in a small island of peace and plenty, surrounded by the ravages and storms of World War II. The placid scene at the center, full of innocence and love, including white doves representing peace, is set on a hill surmounting a scene of soldiers in battle and threatening storms in the distance. The print was made by Herbert Rosengren in 1944, when he was a young man in his 1930s, no doubt moved by hope but fearful of the terrors of war. Rosengren was born in Illinois and trained at the Art Institute of Chicago, and later worked in New Jersey. The print is signed and dated.
