About the Item

Set of six original vintage sport posters published by the Levi Strauss clothing brand (founded 1853) for the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games commissioned by the blue jeans manufacturer Levi's as official sponsors of the US team for the 1980 Olympic Games; this Levi's Olympic Opportunity Sweepstakes campaign emphasized a sport associated with each of the six continents competing in the event - Skiing (North America), Gymnastics (Asia), Swimming (Australia), Track & Field (Africa), Soccer (South America), Cycling (Europe) - but the posters were withdrawn following the decision by US President Carter to boycott the Olympics in protest after the USSR invaded Afghanistan in December 1979. The posters feature the Levi's logo and stylized title text in the margin below the images, as follows: [1] Europe Cyclist poster features a close-up of the rear wheel of a racing bicycle with a map of Europe as the rear derailleur gear set against a bright yellow background with small silhouettes of cyclists racing along the horizon. Artist: Nicolas Sidjakov. [2] Australia Diving poster features an Australian diver wearing a green swimming costume performing a perfect dive above a deep blue water pool square with a sequence of her dive reflected from a map of Australia floating above in the distance. Artist: Bryan Honkawa. [3] Asia Gymnast poster features colorful artwork depicting a gymnast executing a perfect handstand on a map of Asia with small silhouettes showing a sequence of her gymnastics routine ending with a flying bird along one of the striped lines in the background. Artist: Michael Manwaring. [4] Africa Athletics Track Archery poster features a great graphic design depicting an athlete stretching over an archer formed from the shape of the map of Africa with the arrow on the bow represented by a runner in action on the track in the background. Artist: M. Schwab. [5] South America Football poster features a dynamic graphic design depicting a football player in white kicking a ball from the map of South America up to a footballer kicking the ball into orbit against the dark blue space background. [6] North America Slalom Ski Jumping poster features dynamic artwork depicting a skier in red, white and blue skiing at speed with the white spray of snow lit up over the map of North America highlighted on a globe above small silhouettes of a ski jumper leading to a skier with arms outstretched to wings.
