Moma Photography of Jacques Villon Composition by Soichi Sunami, circa 1950

About the Item

Offered here is a captivating photography composition taken by Soichi Sunami for The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), featuring a composition by Jacques Villon. This photograph bears the stamp on the back, serving as an authentication mark, as shown in the accompanying photos. Soichi Sunami, a modernist photographer influenced by the pictorialist movement, is renowned for his portraits of early modern dancers, including Ruth St Denis, Agnes De Mille, Helen Tamiris, and Martha Graham, with whom he enjoyed an extended artistic collaboration. Born on February 18, 1885, in Okayama Prefecture, Japan, Sunami immigrated to the United States in 1905. He initially settled in Seattle, where he worked for photographer Ella E. McBride, a fellow member of the Seattle Camera Club. His talent was recognized, and he received three awards from an art salon hosted by the local department store Frederick & Nelson. In 1922, Sunami moved to New York City, where he briefly worked for photographer Nickolas Muray before enrolling at the Art Students League. He studied under the tutelage of Ashcan painter John Sloan, alongside his classmate Alexander Calder, whom he later named his son after. For nearly forty years, Sunami held the esteemed position of the official staff photographer at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City. This position proved instrumental in enabling him to avoid internment during World War II. Sunami developed close relationships with influential figures, including artist Natalie Hays Hammond and MoMA founder Abby Aldrich Rockefeller. On August 5, 1957, he became an American citizen, and he passed away on November 12, 1971. His artistic legacy extended to several members of his family, with his son John Sunami pioneering digital art, his son-in-law Robert Kopelson excelling as a pianist, his granddaughter Julia Kopelson pursuing photography, his granddaughter Jennifer Sunami specializing in graphic design, his grandson Christopher Sunami organizing the Columbus Invitational Arts Competition, and his granddaughter-in-law April Sunami engaging in painting. This framed photograph measures approximately 13.78 inches (35 cm) in height, 11.23 inches (28.5 cm) in width, and 0.79 inches (2 cm) in depth. It is elegantly presented in a mid-century wood frame, adding to its aesthetic appeal and harmonizing with its vintage charm. Immerse yourself in the captivating vision captured by Soichi Sunami as he photographs Jacques Villon's composition. This piece serves as a testament to Sunami's artistic prowess and his significant contributions to the world of photography, particularly during his tenure at MoMA.
