Elena Lyakir Diptych, Indian Summer and Learning To Dream Photographs, 2017

About the Item

Contemporary New York artist Elena Lyakir's Diptych, Indian Summer and Learning To Dream, were photographed in 2017 and are part of her Aves Series. It's an ongoing exploration of how we relate to the visual experience emotionally. Images represent reality in symbols. Like memories and dreams, they reveal themselves in the physical world, asserting meaning into the mental activities of life. Using birds as her subjects, she attempts to engage the viewer through self-reflection by evoking memory and facilitating the sensation of feeling. Elena relishes the moments in which the visual experience becomes an emotional one. This diptych is archival pigment print face-mounted onto 1/4” heavy matte acrylic. With an aluminum back and French cleat for hanging. Measurements shown are for the diptych hung with one inch in between each photograph. It will ship directly from the artist's printmaking studio with a signed certificate of authenticity to the collector. Artist's Biography: Raised in communist Ukraine and influenced by mysticism and nostalgia of Soviet cinematography and literature, Elena developed a passion for photography as a young child. In 1990 she immigrated to rural U.S. with her family, seeking political asylum, and at 18 she arrived in New York City alone, impressionable, and adrift. Fascinated by the culture, energy, and ingenuity of the city, she first tried to make ends meet by working as a model and assisting photographers. In 1995 Elena found herself swept away by the vibrant avant-garde art scene of the Lower East Side and creating art became her passion and purpose. She started using large format and toy film cameras and eventually studied photography at MSFA but her unorthodox approach to the medium and adverse childhood experiences with oppressive authority in Ukraine impelled Elena to continue pursuing her art through independent studies and experimentation. Elena’s work is included in private and corporate collections. She has exhibited in galleries and art fairs in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, London, Berlin, Paris, Lille, Sydney, and Istanbul and continues to produce commissioned work for collectors and boutique hospitality brands around the globe.

Whether it was sculpture, painting, jewelry making and interior design, she has always had an intense need to express herself through creativity. Fashion was an all encompassing self expression so it was because of this idea of materializing thoughts, desires and inspirations that she decided to devote her career to the editorial side of the fashion industry. After an internship at Rolling Stone Magazine and then formally starting her career as the assistant to the Fashion Director at Seventeen Magazine, Bonnie moved through the ranks at Glamour Magazine and MTV. She then settled into the position of Travel Editor at Sports Illustrated, where she navigated the world producing exotic and inspiring photo shoots for the magazine’s annual Swimsuit Issue. It was during this time spent in The Islands of the Maldives, Ecuador, Venezuela and Kenya, to mention a few, while working closely with photographers like Sante D’Orazio, Russell James...
