Offered is a black and white sheet-fed gravure photograph by Philippe Halsman entitled, "Barbara Streisand" printed in Italy, 1970s. Philippe Halsman (1906-1979) had a difficult early life due to antisemitism and was able to move to Paris where he soon gained a reputation as one of the best portrait photographers in France, renowned for rather sharp closely cropped images. When Germany invaded France, Halsman obtained a visa to the U.S. aided by his close friend, Albert Einstein. He would go on to collaborate with Salvador Dali and photograph for fashion & news magazines as well as well known persons of the time. He was the first to capture his subjects in mid-air. When asked about this method, Halsman commented, "When you ask a person to jump, his attention is mostly directed toward the act of jumping and the mask falls so that the real person appears." In his 1961 book, "Halsman on the Creation of Photographic Ideas," He discussed ways for photographers to produce unusual pieces of work by following six rules: the rule of the direct approach the rule of the unusual technique the rule of the added unusual feature the rule of the missing feature the rule of compounded features the rule of the literal or ideographic method. In 1958 Halsman was listed in Popular Photography magazine's "World's Ten Greatest Photographers" As regards Barbra Streisand, I am not sure a few paragraphs would give the star her due recognition. She's simply Barbara! "Hello gorgeous!" This photos of Barbra Streisand was from the time period of her early films such as "Funny Girl" and "Hello Dolly", (1960s-1970s).
