    Located in Phoenix, AZ
Surreal painting in excellent condition by Arizona artist Lotan Lotan. Depicts the artist on top of the world - a self-portrait. Framed. Signed lower right by the artist and dated 1974. Painting measures: 24" H x 20" W. Frame measures: 31 1/2" H x 27 1/2" W. Lotan Lotan (1905-1985) Little is known about Lotan Lotan prior to 1952 when he arrived in Arizona in an MG accompanied by his girlfriend Ruth and their pet Bulldog, Sir Oliver Cedric. Ruth, who would later become his wife, was also an artist. In a letter that same year to California artist Claude Buck, Lotan claims to be "living in the middle of the desert painting like never before." He goes on to state in the letter the he had recently changed his name to Lotan Lotan because it was part of "losing the past and becoming an entirely new person . . .doing my best to create a new painting as well as a new personality." Lotan evidently had no problem stretching the truth to help create his new persona. During his Arizona years he typically signed his paintings "Lotan Lotan, PHD, MD" even though he was neither a PHD or a Medical Doctor. Throughout his life he claimed to have received degrees in medicine and a PHD in art from the University of Berlin in 1926. In a 1966 interview with The Carefree Enterprise he recounts how he used to operate a medical clinic and a portrait studio side by side in London. "At the same time I was treating the social outcasts of the Soho district, I was also receiving portrait commissions from the royalty and political nobility of Europe and America." He goes on in the interview to state that he did commissioned portraits of King George V of England, President Warren Harding...

  • Original Painting "Laying in Wait" by Ron Crooks
    By Ron Crooks
    Located in Coeur d'Alene, ID
Oil on canvas; Framed. Ron painted about 200 oils of Western scenes a year. "I picked Western subjects because they let the artist use landscape, people, storytelling…I think the peak in art was the French Impressionist," he observes. "It is a looseness in style and the paintings that border abstract. I hope my style goes that way. My feeling is that if an artist lives to be 200, he becomes an abstract painter, boiling down all he wants to interpret into his abstract essence. Basically, all painting is abstract. A good painting is a good abstraction." Period: Last half of the 20th century. Origin: Otis, Oregon Size: 30" x 40"; Frame 36" x 46" Family Owned & Operated Cisco’s Gallery deals in the rare, exceptional, and one-of-a-kind pieces that define the history of America and the Old West. • Modern Still-Life Pinecone Oil Painting Panel Buffie Johnson 1974 Plant Series
    By Buffie Johnson
    Located in Brooklyn, NY
Oil on linen. "Pit Thea", Study of a pine cone. From the Plant Series 1968-1989. Signed lower left, dated 1974. Signed and titled and dated on back. 20" X 24" (floating frame 21" X 25"). My imagery is rooted in the world of the spirit which manifests itself through ritual, myth and symbol. The monolithic single-image plant forms which I began painting in 1968 are potent symbols of the ancient Great Goddess in Her aspect as ‘Lady of the Plants’, who . . . has been worshipped under a thousand names since the beginnings of prehistory.” (Buffie Johnson, Artist’s Statement for the exhibition catalogue of The Language of Symbols, Landmark Gallery, New York City, April 1980.) “... in the ancient world ... such images were perceived as sacred. This sense of divinity inherent in the plant has inspired these icons and through them I hope to evoke a similar magical experience. These forms were created both as metaphors for the spiritual mystery of nature . . . [and] as celebrations of the feminine.” (Buffie Johnson, Artist’s Statement for the exhibition catalogue of Buffie Johnson: The Spirit of Plants, Chuck Levitan Gallery, New York City, October 3rd – October 26th, 1997.)
