Size of the canvas: 42 x 59,5 cm Size with its frame: 60 x 78 cm >> WILL Franck (1900-1951) Frank WILL, whose real name is Frank William BOGGS, was born in Nanterre in March 1900. Son of Frank Myers BOGGS, he is in permanent contact with the works of his father and shows, from the age of 10, a real interest for painting. Thus, his first recorded paintings date from 1916 and are landscapes of the Autouillet area, where his family moved shortly after his birth. To avoid any confusion with his father's signature, Frank WILL first signs his works "Franque", then "Frank" in 1917, "William Frank" in 1918, "Franck-Will" in 1919, and finally "Frank-Will" in 1921. Occasionally, he will sign with the pseudonym "Belliot" or "Naudin". Continuing his work, the artist quickly joined Montmartre and its bohemian life. In 1917, he became friends with the painter GEN-PAUL. Together they "made the rounds" by playing music in the courtyards of Belleville and Menilmontant and by painting views of the capital. We know of a picture painted by four hands in 1926, "Personnage dans la rue sous la neige", mischievously signed Gen-Will and Frank Paul. Frank WILL began to meet with a certain success and his views of Paris were popularized from 1925 onwards in the form of postcards by Éditions Barré & Dayez. We find his Sacré-Cœur, his Opéra Garnier, his Gare du Nord, his Colonne Vendôme... He also took advantage of his various travels during the 1920s and 30s to perfect his painting and approach new themes according to the landscapes he encountered. With Normandy (among others Rouen and Honfleur) in 1922, La Rochelle in 1926, Amiens in 1929, or Barfleur in 1930, Franck WILL discovers in particular the theme of large sailing ships, vessels of which he is very fond and which will remain one of his recurring themes, sometimes even in compositions of imaginary naval battles. In 1936, Frank WILL married Victoire Royer, sixteen years his senior. The couple settled in Mantes-la-Jolie and took advantage of the summer season to go to Le Tréport and sell the artist's watercolors in a tiny gallery on the Quai François Ier. Unable to give up Montmartre and his bohemian life, the couple separated and Frank WILL reinvested in his father's studio, located on the Boulevard de Clichy. He then spends lavishly, evaporating his personal resources but also his parental heritage in general tours in the estaminets and cabarets of the City of Light. As a musician, he was part of jazz bands, then of the brass band La Chignole with his friend Gen Paul, but also Jean d'Esparbès, Pere Créixams, Tony Agostini and Marcel Aymé. Although he was part of the Montmartre figures, he was always in debt and destroyed his health in drunken parties. In 1950, he was hit by a bus in the Place de l'Opéra. Weakened by alcohol and neglecting medical care, he undergoes a partial removal of the right lung. But this one goes badly and he dies at the age of 50. He is buried next to Frank and Josephine Boggs, in the family vault of the Père-Lachaise cemetery (44th division) (his name was never engraved).
